The Kingdom of Emlyn is like cool water on jagged rocks. The capital, Caerleon, is forged of strength and honor, unyielding stone encircling what many would consider an impregnable fortress. It is both home to legend and valor, those who reside being practical in nature. Residents tend to be Human or Hoggur.
“Honor and valor before pride and glory!” Is a motto of Emlynians.
The reticent nature of Emlynians as well as their appreciation for strength and honor is prevalent in all aspects of their society. The architecture of the capital city Caerleon though not as flashy as other cities is both practical and resilient. Made of stone and iron, Caerleon was constructed to never fall. Though some, especially upon first impressions would say Emlynians are not passionate, they would be wrong. They are very passionate about loyalty, justice and tradition. They respect the ways of old because they have never forgotten their history.
Overview
- Capital
- Caerleon
- Traits
- Loyal, yet distrustful of the unknown, taciturn yet always noble, persistent, practical, stubborn, courageous, honorable and defined by a precise moral code.
- Slaves
- The kingdom of Emlyn believes all men and women are born free—they do not keep slaves.
- Languages
- They speak a variety of proto-gaelic, as well as common.
- Given the very nature of Sanctuary, new languages and words enter the kingdom daily. Language develops slowly, while slang can develop very quickly. The villagers, in all places except Emlyn, have become used to new words, especially those of the ruling class which are often picked up quickly by the younger generation. In general, however, there are some trends that exist across the realms. Read More ...
- Import & Exports
- Weapons made of iron. Medicinal herbs and salves.
- It is our intention to implement in-game resource nodes which may be controlled via RPCSS. The kingdom pages provide some general fictional ideas as to what types of imports and exports are traditional for each of the kingdoms. Advanced in-game resources, such as magical ores, may eventually be claimed by different RPCSS player teams, thereby restricting player access to these resources. Read More ...
- Occupations
- Warriors and soldiers. Tacticians and strategists. Herbalists and healers. Occasionally, bards.
- Family, Marriage, Divorce
- The strong sense of honor and loyalty those of Emlyn inherently have, make it difficult for them to renege on commitments. Therefore, Emlynians rarely divorce. They value family and in many respects fight as courageously as they do to ensure the survival of their kin. Even if two individuals decide to separate and are no longer romantically involved, they will often still refer to each other "husband/wife." Once the bond of family has been established, only a true death will sever the tie.
- Religion
- Those of Emlyn follow the Gods associated with the eight primary virtues; Compassion, Honesty, Honor, Humility, Justice, Sacrifice, Spirituality, and Valor. Interpretation of the virtues can change from age to age or leadership to leadership. In fact, how the gods embody a virtue may differ from their predecessor. This is demonstrated in the varied historical accounts of how the virtues have been followed on a sliding scale of liberal to fanatic.
- Religion has changed a great deal in the last century for all of the kingdoms since the fall of the Thorn King. As non-human peoples re-emerge into the light they bring with them both ancient traditions and new needs for religion and spirituality. The religion of this kingdom, like all kingdoms, is a synthesis of such. Read More ..
- Art & Literature
- Displays of precision with weapons and exhibitions of sparring sum up was is considered art for Emlynians. However, literature (specifically tales of courage/honor/elaborate sagas concerning the past), can often be heard near roaring fires. Often these retellings are sung.
- Law & Criminals
- Due to the knightly influence prevalent in the Kingdom of Emlyn, those who have been accused of a crime, such as those who have stolen, or unjustifiably killed another, would be brought to a tribunal of knights (often the heads of ruling houses), where they would be judged. If the accuser or accused did not agree with the judgement of the tribunal, justice could be sought through trial by combat. Both the accuser or accused could select a champion, often one would be selected from within family.
- Governance
- The ruling house of Emlyn is usually one of a handful of knight orders present in the kingdom, each ruled by a warrior.
- The native people of Sanctuary are have become accustomed to unusual and sweeping changes in the leadership and ruling class of their individual kingdoms as noble houses, both great and small ever vie for control of the lands. This fiction is brought to life in the web-based game RPCSS which allows for player teams to compete for control of estates, strongholds, castles and the five capitals. However, each kingdom has its own traditions of leadership, some of which have been in implementation for centuries.
