Strife comes in many forms, leaving a blanket of darkness that weighs heavily upon all. However, slivers of light can be found if sought with diligence. The recent plight of Sanctuary has given rise to this newly formed Alliance, backed with strength, compassion, and a thirst to discover the keys to unlocking the doors to its future. It welcomes those who support the preservation and progression of life.

Story

Sylise sat in meditative prayer before the alien shrine, the objects of sacrifice as proof of devotion scattered about its base. The silence was deafening. Something had caused a decline in the people of Sanctuary. The natives seemed fewer and fewer and even the heroes seemed to be isolated of late. Once again, for the twentieth consecutive day, intrusive thoughts of decades prior needled their way into her ritual, causing pain and regret to contort her face.

They’d been powerless to stop the genocide, despite their people being numerous and scattered across Emorea. The humans and the naga had shared a common enemy, but that enemy was devious, cruel, and evil to the very core. When news of the fall of the human capital Dawn’s Light reached Sylise’s people far to the deep south, their people rallied and drove back the Khetids, placing a heavy impact upon their numbers and driving them away. It would be the same fate Sylise’s people would meet many decades later.

Unable to continue with prayers, Sylise set her thoughts to paper.

“We were unable to assist our allies in the darkest hour of their life. I never could fathom the terror they faced until our time came. At that moment, I knew how quickly death came for them. I regret that our people could not save the humans from their fate, though I know the circumstances were beyond our control.

Yet, I cannot and will not let this fate be the same for those that inhabit this world. This world is rich: varied backgrounds, races, stories, experiences, knowledge and so, so much more. The past paves the way for the future - and we must do our duty to ensure the continuation of life. I cannot bring back those lost in my home world, nor those lost here and in others, but I shall honor their sacrifices by doing my part to ensure others of this world (and others) survive.”

It would be another fortnight before she found a foothold, and not without a struggle at that. Sincerity and charm went long ways, as did true compassion and charity. While she was far too obvious to go about skulking around for information, there were those she knew who could - and would. Gold was often a coveted item, but lately, so was food and ale. The trade routes were thinning and things that had been taken for granted in abundance were valuable in scarcity.

Sylise carried a basket laden with food and drink to an outlying cottage at the edge of the wood. In her youth as a young priestess, she served food to the elderly and infirmed as a repayment of their service to the collective and to the All-Mother. She was reminded, briefly, of those days decades ago, and as she rapped upon the weathered door, shook those memories out of her head. A moment or two later, she was greeted by the gaunt face of a human woman. “You came,” spoke the woman with a hoarse voice.

“Of course I did, Jasta. I would not dare break my promise,” she replied with a gentle smile. As the door opened wider, Sylise slithered in and wasted no time to set the food and drink upon the table. Serpentine eyes flicked towards the bed in the corner of the cottage and back to Jasta once more. “Is he sleeping?” she said as quietly as she could.

“Down just an hour ago. I can wake him-”

“Oh no, no. This won’t be my last trip, I assure you. He surely needs the rest.”

Jasta ate a small meal and as she finished the modest glass of ale, amidst light chit-chat, Sylise quietly pulled out a book and a pencil. “Whenever you are ready, my dear. We can begin.” The woman spoke hesitantly at first, as she did the first time, but soon felt more at ease the more she imparted her story to Sylise. She wrote quickly, filling the pages of the journal and the next with names, places, dates, and events, including small illustrations in the margins when necessary. An hour later, two books were filled and within them were a handful of pages dog-eared for vital information.

It would be much later before she found herself within her own sanctuary, taking every care to extract the information and compile it for the archives. Somewhere within would be the key.
