Titles of Nobility

and other Titles of Position
General discussion on Dyrling, Valgarin, Jillhani and Zuberi

Obviously the guild page didn’t do a great job of clarifying how this works. So here is a more detailed and lengthy description of how this all works.

The Dyrlings have 6 “hereditary titles”, 2 barons, 2 counts and 2 dukes. These titles are names for the position, not necessarily the last name of the title holder. Fictionally the titles are “generally hereditary” but because that’s impossible to do in an online game, they are GENERALLY hereditary rather then SPECIFICALLY hereditary, because we want the in game freedom of having those titles assigned to players by the king. If they were specifically hereditary we’d end up tying our hands as to who replaces someone when they stop playing or change chars.

A player can not CLAIM these titles. To have the opportunity at these titles, the player must have an approved guild for that noble house, AND must have the title “approved” by who ever the player king or queen is. Members of the “house guild” can be from all Dyrling social levels.

However these noble houses have many “families” in them. A player MAY claim to be of one of these UNESTABLISHED houses, and may even claim kinship to the fictional duke, baron or count. BUT there is something that must be strongly considered before you claim kinship to an unestablished house. You do not OWN the fiction of that house in anyway.

If months down the line some other player comes along with the player support to establish the house as a guild, they have no obligation to including you or even resolve your characters fiction with theirs. Because of this, I strongly suggest that if you are claiming kinship to an unestablished house you do not claim any direct kinship to the baron, count or duke or any other kind of position within the house.

This is very important – lots of people want to be big wigs. Only sanctuary the only big wigs were ones that I approved. I want to let players control this, but that means that the players need to support those decisions and build and run the guilds actively. Being a noble title is more then just claiming the name, you need to be prepared to run an active role in the kingdom’s community.

This goes for the following also. Thanes and Lairds in Valgard, Mayors of towns in both Telrae’dor and Valgard, Sheiks of the Oasis in Zuben, Noble houses in the Jillhani, Patron Nobles of the Zuberi, etc.

What it doesn’t apply to: Minor noble family names that are not one of the approved fictions. For example, I don’t think anyone will give you a hard time about being a Dyrling Squire or the relative of one. As long as you remember its not a “landed” squire and can not claim specific properties in Telrae’dor. The relative of some fictional “named” Title … In the Dyrlings is the opportunity to be given what is called a “court” title. If you definitely want to play a noble and need to make something up, go ahead and call yourself the relative of some fictional court titled nobility. Use any honorific from France or England other then baron, duke or count. However YOU can not be that title, just a child, relative or even widow.

You can call yourself thane or laird of some unknown or tiny Valgard clan, but recognize that you are not “officially” a thane or laird and players are under no obligation to acknowledge your self-appointed title.

You can be the head of some noble Jillhani family who is SWORN to one of the 5 ancient houses, or is even out of disfavor, but like with the others, players are not obligated to acknowledge it.

SUMMARY

In summary the following positions and titles are RESERVED for those who have approved guilds.

The six landed titles in Telrae’dor (2 barons, 2 dukes, 2 counts) Any political position, such as mayor for the 12 Dyrling towns or the city of Telrae. www.sanctuaryshard.com/Comraich...yrling/town.htm Any other “court titles” in Telrae’dor, these will be given out as part of RP by the king.

Head of one 5 Jillhani Ancient Houses Head of the Jillhani River People Villages

Laird or Thane of one of the specific Villages or Valleys in Valgard Mayor or other political position of one of the Valgard city-towns www.sanctuaryshard.com/Comraich...lgarin/town.htm

Sheik or head of one of the Zuben Oasis Head of one of the Zuben “Patron” Families, that is currently not defined

And last to reiterate: I strongly discourage a player from claiming any direct connection to any guild that is not established and they do not run or at least belong to. Only those who get approved to run the guild have control over the fiction.

I hope this clears this up.
