WorshipYrsa has no centralized priesthood, and the religious ceremonies of a household or a gathered family are led by the oldest members of each gender, together as well as separately. Most religious ceremonies and practices concern the welfare of the family and kin, and are led by the oldest female. Burials and rites to protect the crops and animals are led by her male counterpart. There exists a wandering sisterhood of prophets and shamans called "Völva", which are said to be the chosen of the goddess. These females travel across the land, going between the homes where there is always a place set aside for them. They represent the war and mystical aspects of the goddess, and there are never more then one visiting at any given time. A Völva will if asked lead the ceremonies of the household she visits, but she will not take over from her hosts. If a young girl shows promise one of the sisters will take her with them on the roads as an apprentice. The Valgarins usually worshiped their goddess in opened air. No statues or idols were made. The Valgarins consider meadows, groves, rocks, hillocks, the shores of swampy lakes and other similar places to be sacred. Also, the fields of crops could become the scene of a worshipping ritual as they hoped Yrsa would bless the fields. Sometimes, the places used for rituals were enclosed with a simple fence made of ropes. Inside this areas considered sacred, no violence was allowed. One could not enter this place with any kind of weapon. |
