The Story of the Two Sacred Eggs

In the days of gods and goddesses, in the world of Comraich, in the mountains of Valgard, Yrsa the Warrior Raven first made her home. In order to live there, she defeated the giant Borath, but that is a story for another time.

Yrsa's eyrie was on crest of the highest mountain. She was the guardian of two Sacred Eggs. The land of Comraich was fertile and green. Each day she traveled far and wide, inspecting her new domain. Her chosen people, the Valgarins, inhabited the highlands and lowlands of the mountain range. The warrior Skolls learned the ways of the mountain passes, while the Ceiki herdsmen raised their animals and farmed the great rolling moors.

During her periods of rest, Yrsa hid herself in the mist of the great mountain, because a strange creature roamed throughout the rivers and streams, in addition to the oceans--the serpent, Ji'Kalna. Ji'Kalna's domain was the oceans of Comraich. It was as had been decided long ago, among the four gods who came to this world.

Rains came and flooded the valleys. Many Valgarins died in the floods, but that is a story for another day. Some time after the flood, Yrsa returned to her eyrie to find one of the Sacred Eggs gone, and the other had been crushed all over the ground. The yellow yolk mixed with the fertile soil of the mountain, and a woman formed. This was the First Priestess of Valgard.

Yrsa was furious that the serpent Ji'Kalna stole one Sacred Egg and damaged the other. She had to retrieve the missing egg.

Far and wide, she flew, her great multicolored wings fanning the oceans. Her righteous anger boiled her blood and the waters churned with every pass. Much of the water evaporated, revealing the dank mud beneath. Yrsa flew back and forth, around and around the oceans of Comraich; her wings created waterspouts.

"Serpent!" Yrsa shrieked. "Arise from the waters! We shall see who reigns supreme in this land. I have defeated the mighty Borath, and you do not scare me!"

Ji'Kalna rose up from the water. She was as tall as the sky. Her silvery scales glistened in the sunlight.

"Usurper!" Ji'Kalna hissed. "You shall not survive!" The she laughed at Yrsa. "Your precious egg shall never be recovered. It is gone forever, for I have eaten it."

Yrsa dove straight for Ji'Kalna's lavender eyes. Her sharp talons were poised to poke them out. But Ji'Kalna dodged, trying to dive down into deeper waters.

But Yrsa had expected that, and there were few deep waters left for Ji'Kalna to hide in. The serpent swam fast, but Yrsa was faster. She reached the last area of deep water and began to fan them dry.

"Stop!" Ji'Kalna cried. Her body was completely exposed, and she became sluggish in the heat. "Stop!"

"Ah, I see we have to come to an agreement, do we not?" Yrsa's green eyes flashed. "The egg for the water."

Ji'Kalna hissed, and made a lunge toward Yrsa. Yrsa wheeled upwards directly into the sun. Ji'Kalna was blinded. The water receded further and the serpent couldn't move. She struggled in the mud.

At last, she had to concede defeat. "Yes....." she slurred. "The egg for the water." Although Ji'Kalna did not want to give up her prize, she needed the water to survive. She would exact revenge on Yrsa and her chosen people, somehow, someday, until the end of time. Ji'Kalna's gullet rippled, and her mouth opened to reveal the Sacred Egg.

Yrsa shrieked in victory, taking the egg carefully in her talons. "The egg for the water--but you shall no longer roam free here, Serpent!" She calmed her wings, and the waters flowed back slowly. Yrsa flew off, her war cry echoing against the sky. She watched as the serpent dove downward.

The waters were not as deep as before. Again, Ji'Kalna rose up, hissing at Yrsa. "You promised the waters would return."

"They shall! But you shall never travel in the rivers and streams of Valgard again. You will be trapped in the ocean forever!" Yrsa flew directly over Ji'Kalna. Ji'Kalna lunged at her, but Yrsa dodged the attack, not noticing that a single multicolored feather fell to the water's surface. She flew back to the mountain. Ji'Kalna noticed the feather, and took up the boon.

"You have won this day, usurper, but the war has just begun." Ji'Kalna would learn the healing secrets of the Warrior Raven.

Yrsa returned to First Priestess and gently set down the Sacred Egg at her feet. "This will be your son. I shall be your sacred guardian, taking care of you in times of plenty and in times of famine. Your descendants will mix with the Skoll and the Ceiki, and the serpent shall trouble you no more. Now go down to the people of Valgard and tell them of my promise." And so First Priestess did as Yrsa commanded.

So that is how the first priestess of the Valgarins came into being.

And we all know that this isn't the only story of Yrsa and Ji'Kalna, but those stories shall be told another day.
