RitualsWhen crops are sown in the spring a hole is dug in the middle of the field. Pieces of bread and some eggs are put into the hole and some beer is poured on top. If this pleases Yrsa she will make the crops grow tall and strong. The ritual of Midvinterblod calls for the killing of animals and hanging them in trees as a sacrifice to Yrsa. Ritual of First BloodingCrisp, newly fallen snow crunched under Gavin's heavy, fur-lined boots as he made his way through the forest. He pulled his woolen cloak about his body to keep out the cold of the fierce Valgard winters, his bow held in one hand with a quiver strapped to his hip. The young Ceiki tread carefully, following a trail of enormous tracks in the snow. He had been alone in the wilderness for days now, performing the right of First Blooding so that he might become a man of his Clan. He trained for weeks, strengthening his skills and his spirit for the grueling task ahead; if he failed, he would be seen as a boy for the rest of his life. As he approached a small knoll in a clearing, his anxious breathing rising in clouds of steam, he froze, spotting his quarry in the glade ahead. A large bear stood on all fours, its great shaggy head lumbering back and forth as it checked the air for scents. It paused, its muzzle pointed in Gavin's direction, and inhaled deeply. The bear fixed its beady-eyed gaze on the young hunter and, rising on its hind legs, gave a deafening roar. Gavin hastily quelled the fear that rose in his heart; the beast was larger than any man he'd ever seen, even the Skoll traders who came down from the mountains. This was the moment he had been waiting for, and he was ready. As the bear charged, he quickly drew an unusual arrow from his quiver. Its tip was made of bronze, etched in protective runes and fletched with the ebony feathers of a raven. Uttering a quick prayer to Yrsa, he pulled the bowstring taut and released the ceremonial arrow. His aim was true; the bronze tip buried itself in the bear's heart, and the creature fell dead, sliding to Gavin's feet. He brushed the frost from the shaggy brown pelt and drew a dagger from its sheath, slitting the creature's throat. As the snow became marred with crimson, he sang a prayer to the Goddess, thanking her for a successful First blood and allowing the bear not to suffer. Slowly, carefully, he cut the skin from the bear and almost reverently bound it in a roll. Cutting the heart from the carcass, he dug a small hole and buried it - with the arrow still piercing the muscle - as a gift for the Goddess. He stood and wiped the blood from his dagger, resheathing it and examining the carcass. "Little sisters, eat well!" he cried to the carrion birds of the forest. "For today, I become a man!" War ChantLook fierce like a warrior "Ka mate! Ka mate! Ka ora! Ka Ora! It's an action chant, often described as a "War Dance", but more a chant with hand gestures and foot stamping, originally performed by Warriors before a battle, proclaiming their strength and prowess and generally abusing the opposition. |
