Relationship
The goddess of the Valgarin is a passionate goddess, and her followers both
like and dislike her as she can be erratic. Religious observance by individuals
often focuses on one of her three personalities.
- The woman of the household was supposed to be the Main religious leader
when no priestess was present.
- Rites and rituals overseen by the Völva: births, deaths, naming rituals,
blessings of the ships, passages of life (perhaps adulthood rites), and
blessings of warriors, also 4 definite holidays celebrated at the equinoxes
and solstices, also possibly a "Völva-only" celebration at each full moon to
celebrate the goddess.
- Since prophecy is a passive gift, meaning it is not something that can
be called upon when needed, to force a vision, the Völva may use divination
methods, such as tossing the runes, which will help them tap into their
subconscious and "force" a vision.
- Differences between Völva and village healers: the Völva are more
learned, more "scientific" in their approach, so to speak, whereas a healer
is more superstitious, for instance, thinking a knife under the bed will cut
the pains of childbirth, whereas a Völva knows better. Völvas still have a
lot of folk medicine, but not quite as superstitious. Völvas know the
specifics of each herb, how they work in conjunction with other herbs,
whereas village healers might only know the basics.
- Distinguishing marks on the Völva: from graduation of acolyte to
Initiate, a girl gets a tattoo on one of her hands in either the crescent
moon or the triple goddess symbol (circle with a crescent on either side),
upon graduation to full sisterhood, the now-woman gets the other hand
tattooed. The tattoo can be colored with the woad blue.
