Soiba Cant This is obviously a very large list, and no one is expected to use it. Also please note, it is a bit more modern then the world is, so we do not officially endorse the use of these terms. However, they are amusing, so are presented here. Skivies: underwear sioba-naked: all but naked; wearing the minimal amount of clothing to cover ones um... privates (derived from the inabilty to ever go totally naked on a sioba boat for lack of privacy's sake) chow-chow: any of a variety of pickled or preserved foods obtained in foreign ports to suplement their rations (obviously an alteration of a Jillhani word) Carry-on: go ahead dungarees: clothing made of old sails; a sioba's clothing in general dog: dodge bamboozle: to trick; to make someone believe you're something that you aren't (i.e. when raiders come into port pretending to be merchants) Ahoy!: A battler cry; a greeting (interestingly I found that this was originally a viking word) geedunk: a treat Jack: what siobas call one another (even the females) saltjunk: sea rations grog: watered down ale duffy: ghost oons: a coin (from oons or ounce of gold) (plural) oonses snottywart: a child on a sioba boat("Mi been able to swim ever since mi was a snottywart!"); a useless person ('snotty' from the habit of children to wipe their noses on their sleeves and 'wart' because they serve no function (and may be a blemish)) Yrsa's chickens: seabirds (which are seen as good luck), an exclamation black dog for a white monkey- a deal Skoll's shirt on a iron spike- a bad fit; a bad idea nibbies: rockhard bread served as sea rations; last; last resort ("Oi'm down to mi nibbies here!") (For nibbies we'd have to abandonship) (since 'nibbies' aren't particular desirable fair and are usually eaten last of all) two nibbies and old boot stew: better than nothing mundungus: totally worthless swing-a-cat: furiously angry (short for 'swing a cat o' nine tails) ("I'm ready to swing a cat here here.") catkiller: a jerk (since a cat is a harmless and beneficial animal aboard a boat catkiller is a general term for a mean or undesirable person) leatherneck: a warrior who travels with siobas (named for the leather gorget they wear); someone who is all brawn and no brains metalneck: a warrior new to traveling with siobas (named for the metal armor (and gorget) he wears and trades for leather after he falls overboard for the first time wing: a friend (obviously of Yrsan origin) (used because a friend, like a wing, is always at your side) make a hole in the ocean: to kill ones self Lars: a nonsioba man (used in adressing people; like 'Mac' or 'Buddy') Moll/Molly: a woman don't know Jack from Lars: to be confused; to be ignorant tar: a hat (from the practice of siobas for waterproofing their clothing with tar) boondockers: boots (not sure where exactly this comes from but it's what we called our boots in the navy) gibby: a pole, stick, or staff swallow the anchor: to face the facts; to do something hard or that one might resent doing nipcheese: a thief; a cheat scaley steak: meat from any of the larger, meatier, dark-fleshed ocean fish (tuna, salmon, etc)
