History

Dvärgar

The Dvargar seem to like to raid the fringes of the kingdom. They do not like to share their land nor their ore.

The winter brings its own form of hostiles – Rumors of Giant snow creatures high in the mountains that come down during winter storms and carry away anyone they find traveling alone.

The Thurer

One of the oldest enemies of the Valgarins are the Thurer, or trolls as they are also called. All sizes and forms of trolls skulk the Valgarin Mountains, living deep down in caves under the mountain. They range from anywhere between 4ft tall and up to an impressive 30ft. Most of them are ragged and hairy with thick manes of dark brown, blonde or even black hair and long beards, and both large ram like horns or tusks are common among all different kinds. They normally dress in the crude hides that are left behind from the animals they kill for food, and sometimes even simple chain mail armors crafted by their own smiths. They also have a strong tradition of tattooing themselves to accentuate old battle scars, as these are a source of great pride for most trolls.

While most trolls would not really be considered smart they are still very cunning hunters and strong fighters. There are still those trolls born with a mind sharp enough to be compared to most humans, and those trolls usually take roles as leaders or shamans in the tribes. Their tribes are surprisingly well organized, although to most outsiders they would not seem it and to most who does not live close to their territories would not even notice that they have any form of organization at all. Each tribe is lead by an old thur bearing the title "fathir" (father) who is chosen based on age and experience. While martial strength is of course always appreciated among the trolls it is far secondary to them when choosing a leader. The leader of the strongest tribe also acts as king for all the thurer, and bears the title "Rivfader".

While it is still unknown exactly where the trolls come from a common story tells of how they were created by Yrsa before she made the Valgarins. The story tells of how she shaped them out of the eternal ice of the far north, but how no matter how hard she tried they were left ugly and bestial in appearance, and how the ice she had made them from left them cold hearted. Because of this she banished them down to the dark caves under the mountains where most of them still live, and instead gave their intended lands to the Valgarins, which is said to be the reason for the trolls deep hatred for them. Another story talks about how they were created by Borath to conquer the lands from Yrsa and her children. Whichever story is true however it is obvious that the thurer have a deep hatred for the Valgarins.

Every so often the trolls march up to the surface to try and reclaim the land they believe to rightfully be theirs. This is the only time they pose a serious threat to the Valgarin, which is why most Valgarins are very careful to keep an eye open for when they spot trolls with their faces covered with blue paint, as this is a sign that they are going to war. Normally however most trolls remain underground and keep to themselves, aside from a few weaker tribes that are desperate enough to venture up and try to claim a valley or such for themselves. The most commonly found trolls however are lone hunters or outcasts that no longer have a tribe; neither of these however poses much of a threat unless provoked however.

The Skogsthurer are the smallest of the trolls and the only kind of thurer to live exclusively on the surface and the most commonly found kind in the southern regions of the kingdom. They live in small nomadic tribes in the deep forests and are a common threat to Ceiki lumberjacks and woodsmen. Its not hard to tell when you are entering the territory of a Skogsthurer tribe from the markings on the trees and grim offerings left by them around the larger trees in an effort to keep the forest calm, as they oddly enough fear the forest they live in. They are also more primitive then their larger cousins and usually just dress in hides and crude leather armors and wielding clubs or simple spears.

The overall most common and most numerous kind of Thurer are the Graathurer, or grey trolls as they are also called. They make their homes in caves around the mountains of Valgard, which they believe were a gift to them from Borath. They are generally much smarter then the Skogsthurer and even craft their own armors and weapons from metals dug up from the depth of the mountain. Every so often a graathurer child is born so much bigger and stronger then other graathurer that it tears itself out of its mother, already the size of a young adult. These children are always male and it then keeps on growing until it stands at least twice or even three times the size of a normal troll, and with its intelligence about as much greater. These rare freaks of nature are known as the kungsthurer, as they are usually the ones who take positions as fathir over a tribe. If one would have the bad fortune of being born in a tribe that is already lead by a kungsthurer then he would most likely be killed at birth or thrown out to fend for himself. Normal graathurer would never dare kill a kungsthurer, as they are believed to be the chosen ones of Borath.

Much deeper down in the mountains, rarely seen by most humans, live the bergathurer. While they tend to grow about as tall as a graathurer they are usually much larger and more muscular. They are very greedy and are known for the large treasures they hoard away in their caves. They are also well known for the strange silver like material they tend to spread over their caves to distract people from their real hoards. This silver is incredibly fragile and completely useless.

In the far frozen north, where normal people would rarely ever find a reason to travel, lives the giant Isthurer (ice trolls). Their names come from the constant frost in their long hair and beards. With no natural predators to threaten them and nothing to hide from the isthurer can grow taller and larger then any of the other trolls. The climate they live in however has made them move very slowly usually as they are actually partly frozen, and it is not unheard of that they sometimes fall asleep and sleep centuries away in the arctic cold.
