Earning your sea legs

The young Sioba got up early in the morning his life was about to become richer. He had convinced the captain of a raiding ship to hire him on as the ships cook. It isn’t a glamorous job, but if the raids are good then so is the pay. He could finally afford to move out of the family house and maybe even buy himself new cloths. His father being a fisherman was able to keep the family fed and warm in the winter, but new clothes were a luxury that just didn’t happen. “We are richly blessed with our family, we need not ask for more.” That’s what he would always say. Cain on the other hand felt that the richly blessed also had a good sword, and a ship to take them to the true wealth. He put on the best clothes he had, only a few rips in them. He ran the entire way to the docks and was hardly out of breath when he arrived. The Captain met him with a quick nod, and pointed to the galley just bellow deck. Cain quickly ran down the stairs to familiarize himself with the set up, and see what work would lay before him. The first thing he noticed was that there was no food in the galley, just the things that one would cook with the food, butter, a few spices and that was about it. There were at least several barrels of fresh water. This was supposed to be a two month voyage. Panicking Cain ran to the Captain. “There’s no food in the galley, what am I supposed to cook?”

With a great full bellied laugh the silk clad captain said. “Ya’ll need to catch it on the way. The rods be stowed over there laddy.” He pointed to a locked box near the mast of the ship. Now Cain understood why he was hired. He is from a family of fishermen, and that is what he is now. Instead of fishing to sell at the market, he is fishing to feed a bunch of cut throats. Undaunted he hurried over to the locked box to look over his equipment. It was in a terrible mess. The lines tangled, hooks all rusted. This didn’t look promising at all.

A few hours later the ship set sail, but instead of hugging the coast the ship headed straight out for the deep waters. Cain was down in the Galley trying to fix up the fishing gear so he had no idea what was going on. Then he felt the ship suddenly jolt to the stern. Running up the stairs the first thing he saw was that there was no shore in sight. The very next thing he saw was one of the crew swallowed whole by a huge sea creature, that had stuck its head out of the water and snatched him right off the deck of the ship. A huge rush of adrenaline coursed through his body. He saw a harpoon laying on the deck near where the sailor had been. He jumped to it landing squarely on it as it pitched and rolled with the sea serpent crashing into the ship. He checked to make sure the rope was tied tightly to the ship, and the shaft, he peered over the rail of the ship to see where the serpent was. Saying a quick prayer to Yrsa, he asked that he would not die today. He wrapped the rope once around his arm and jumped over the edge, with the harpoon firmly grasped in both hands. With all his weight on it the harpoon sank deeply into the back of the creature, which gave out a shriek that still haunts him to this day. The serpent took of swimming so hard and fast that the ship followed along, and there was Cain still hanging onto the rope for dear life. He would only have a chance to get a breath once every five or so minutes, but he still hung on. After several hours the creature finally tired out and the crew was able to haul both Cain and the serpent onto the ship. Cain insisted that he get to try cooking the serpent as it was his job to fish so they would eat what he caught. Cain didn’t get off with out a scratch mind you. The rope had been pulled so tight that all the flesh that was under the rope was pulled off right to the bone. And that is the true story as to how your Captain lost his right hand. Now get back to the Galley we are heading out right away.
