The Building of the Hallaic Wall

Two thousand years ago, Valgard was a reknown warrior kingdom. It is said that a great wall ran from one edge of the mountain, down the moors and across the south edge of Valgard before turning north at the countries east side.

The wall was said to be built by Úlfr the Mighty, High King of Valgard in the years 3023 to 3065. At the time, the Firbolgs were a powerful race and threatened the safety of Valgard. Skirmishes along the southern boarders lasted for over a decade, yet it was a loosing battle. The people and livestock of Valgard was not safe, and soon the standing forces numbered only old men and young boys.

It was Halla the Forthright that decided that this would simply not do. A shield sister in her own right, she knew the war would never be won this way. And late one eve, she left the hold of her husband and king and traveled farther north into the halls the Mountain King. There she plead for their help in the war. So charming was her voice, so winning was her ways, and so strong was her arm that the Mountain King was moved by her plea and agree to help, on one condition.

The condition was agreed upon, and a fort night later, she left the mountain hall with a small force of warriors, masons of the highest skill and two stone weavers. They first passed into Dardasheim and gathered with them all the women of the village. They began on the valley’s western flank, the stone weavers standing opposite of each other, warriors at the ready, and the masons with pick and brawn prepared.

The stone weavers began to chat, a deep and haunting melody, the earth erupted at their feet, and great blocks of earth brown stone arose. In the wake of the arising stone, the masons made a great wall and towers. They moved quickly by some standards, but slower by others.

A furlong a day with the two stone weavers and the expert masons. Halla worried that this would not be fast enough, that the wall would not come in time for spring. So she sent to the mother house for the greatest of the Skald to join her, perhaps their voices could be added to the stone weavers. Yet that would take many days for the word to reach them, and the small band worried. It was one Dverge mason, a well known mistress of stone and steel, named Vigdís that stepped forward and spoke to the stone weavers. She beseeched them to teach her the chants, to let her learn so that she could help. The stone weavers of the Mountain King scoffed and said such was not possible for one of Valgarin kind, yet they found it a great joke that she had asked, and no doubt with a warm eye to her round cheeks and ample hips. So they began to teach the chant, the meaning of the tones, and all thru the night she and her sisters listened.

Dawn came quickly on the moors at that time, and soon with little rest they began again, yet this time Vigdis chanted with them. Tho of poorskill with the chants, she was a master mason and knew the nature of earth and stone, and the earth rumbled and the rock spew and the air was thick with dust and smoke.

And so it went, this band of warriors, masons, stone weavers and one shield sister strode the land of Valgard from end to end -- building the great Hallaic Wall.

In one winters season a wall of mammoth proportions had been built and the mountain folk went home, with them they carried two long braids and one rather pleased looking Dverge woman.

Some would think that from this day forth, that Halla would have been known as Halla the Savior, yet one can never anticipate what a Valgarin will take pride in, and from that day forth, she was known as Halla the Shorn.

Yet the wall stands no longer, and that is another tale.
