Getting Started

  • You should be here if your application has been given final approval by a senior staff member.
  • You should have been given a user name or password by a GM or should be contacting a GM for a user name and password.

Yep, here it is, the COMPLETE file setup for Comraich. These instructions will assume you are starting from having no UO install at all, so if you do have an OSI install already, just pick up from step #3. If you have any problems during installation that these instructions cannot help you with, feel free to ask one of our staff members via ICQ or our IRC chat for help.

1) Take your UO CD, and install. Any version of UO will do except the first, pre-T2A version (for those not in the know, T2A refers to The Second Age update). If you have one of the more recent versions of US, install the 2D client. The 3D client will not work on Comraich. Also note on some Windows XP systems, you may need to manually create an Ultima Online folder before you install into it. WinXP will sometimes screw up file permissions with the install and you will get errors trying to run UO.

2) This is the painful part for those people on dial up, especially if you have an older copy of UO. Run the installed shortcut from your start menu, or run UO.EXE from your Ultima Online folder and allow it to COMPLETELY patch from OSI. This step can have the most problems for those on dial up. Occasionally, the patching will halt and when you try to start again, it will give you errors. If it does, go to your Ultima Online Folder, go into the Patch folder in there, and delete the entire contents. Then try again.

3) This is where you will be starting if you already have an OSI install of UO. You will need to backup several files inside your Ultima Online folder (unless you never EVER plan on playing anywhere else but Comraich :) ). There are many ways you could back up these files. One method is to rename each of them with the extension .BAK (i.e. MAP0.MUL into MAP0.MUL.BAK). Another method is to create a folder inside your Ultima Online directory and call it ORIGINAL BACKUPS or something, and drag the files to that folder. The folder method would make going back and forth between shards a bit easier if you are on multiple shards. The files to be backed up are:

CLIENT.EXE

HUES.MUL

MAP0.MUL

MULTI.IDX

MULTI.MUL

RADARCOL.MUL

STAIDX0.MUL

STATICS.MUL

TILEDATA.MUL

VERDATA.MUL

4) Now another painful part for those people who are on dialup, downloading the Comraich files. The Comraich downloads are available here: Download Page.

You will not need EVERY file there as some of them are duplicates, to make it easier to update when we add something to the map or static files. You will need to get Client 2.0.0b; the Hues, Multi and Tile Data (also referred to as the Extra Files); The Map and Statics file; and the Verdata Patch. You may also want to get the Midis for some added music we are using, but they are not required (installation instructions for them at the end).

5) Now that you have all the files, you will need to unzip them into your Ultima Online folder. Depending on which mirror you download from, you MAY see a message asking you to replace the VERDATA.MUL file. Make sure you are using the larger one from the patch file and not the smaller one from an older copy of the Extra Files archive. This will install a total of 10 files, the same 10 you backed up in step 3.

6) The last file setup thing to do is to edit your LOGIN.CFG file. You can open it in any text editor. Make sure every line in there begins with a semi-colon (";"), then add in the following line (minus the quotes of course): "Loginserver=comraich.dyndns.org,5004". Close and save the LOGIN.CFG file.

7) Now, assuming you have applied, been approved, and contacted a staffer to create your account, you are ready to log in. Run your CLIENT.EXE file by double clicking on it. Do NOT use the shortcut the installer created as that can screw up the entire process and make you have to install all over again. Enter your username and password, and choose ADVANCED character creation as Comraich does not support the templates. We strongly advise you to start with 50 Healing, 50 Magic Resist, and as much Strength as possible in the Advanced settings. Setup your character, log in at any of the cities on the old OSI map, and you will find yourself in the start room. Double click yourself to get your paper doll up, click the Help button on the doll window, choose the New Player option in the Help window, and enter a short message saying you are ready for a GM to come help you get fully setup. You will be stuck in the start room until a GM escorts you out.

8) Be aware that staff members also play here, and are VOLUNTEERING their time. A wait in the start room of 15, 20, 30 minutes is not unusual. If staff are online and playing, it may take them some time to get out of their hunting area (staff player characters have access to NO useful special powers that regular players don't have), to finish up the RP they are in, to finish up the quest they are running, etc.  Don't page over and over as the pages DO remain in the help Que the GMs see, even if you are offline. And please try and be patient, we really ARE here to help, but if we aren't helping right away, there usually is a good reason.

9) When a staffer arrives, they will walk you through setting up your race, class, skin and hair colors, given your starting gold, taken to the city for your race, and hopefully find you a guide of your race to give you a tour of your races city. We'll also answer any questions you have, so don't panic thinking we are going to make you run around in a sink or swim environment. :)

10) Actually, you are already done, but remember up above where I said we'd explain installing the Midis? Well, here it is. There are a lot of files in the midi archive. They all go into the Music folder in your Ultima Online folder. To here them, you have to have your sound option turned on in UO. You can find it in the first panel of your Options window when you are in game.

That's it. From time to time we may update some of the files. Usually it's the statics as we add in new housing, cities, etc. Sometimes we add in colors in the hues file. Whatever it is, we will provide a file to replace your existing one with on the download page.
