Taming

To tame a creature walk up to it, use your Animal Taming skill and target the creature. Not all creatures of the realm can be tamed. Of those that can be tamed, some are easier than others.

Another thing that you will need to do is keep the creature fed. If you don't keep the creature fed it will go wild on you. This may not be a big deal for a horse or cow, but if other more aggressive creatures go wild you don't want to be standing in its way.

It is accepted practice to stable your pets when you aren't around. When you stable your pet you are assured your pet will get the utmost care in the world.  Stabling pets, especially the dangerous ones means you do not have to begin the task of re-taming them later. The cost of stabling a pet will vary based on the pet.

If you log out without stabling your pet or lose connection, your pet will go into hiding and wait for your return. If you do not return for 30 days your pet will be deleted.

You can only have so many tamed creatures. Because some creatures are more powerful than others, various creatures have different values. You may be able to run around with nine cute bunnies hopping at your heels but may only be able to have one dragon running around with you. The number of pets you can have is based on your taming skill. The "pet value" is based on difficulty of taming the pet.

Types of Tamed Creatures

There will be four types of tamable creatures – common, bred, raised and unusual.

Common creatures

Common creatures are the creatures you normally think of as low end. Wolves, bears, lions, tigers, dogs, big cats, eagles, horses, ostards, etc. These creatures are the ones found currently spawned in the world. We may review the skill needed to tame them, however most are tamable with a skill requirement under 90, and quite a few with a skill requirement under 60.

When tamed, common creatures will have the skills and stats of the creatures as they were when wild. Meaning when tamed, the creature skills and stats don't change.

Common creatures’ skills:

  • Can be trained through usage

  • Can not have training purchased for them

  • Can be trained up to a combat cap of 120

Raised & Bred creatures

Raised and bred creatures will be the same selection of creatures, i.e. wolves, bears, lions, tigers, dogs, big cats, eagles, horses, ostards, etc. However these creatures are acquired as “babies”. Raised animals can be found as babies in the wild.  Bred animals can be gotten from an animal breeder (animal breeding is not yet implemented; therefore you must find your baby animals in the wild.)

When a raised or bred creature reaches maturity it will have all combat skills set equal to your taming skill minus 10 points. Bred/raised creatures will also have a much higher set of stats. The skills and stats of bred/raised creatures are the same for all graphics. This means a wolf is as good as a bear. While we realize there is some fictional disbelief with this choice, it also allows players to choose the creature they want, that best suits their RP, rather then trying to get the “best” creature.

Raised and Bred creatures’ skills:

  • Can be trained through usage

  • Training can be purchased for them at an NPC

  • Can be trained up to a combat cap of 120

Unusual creatures - NOT YET IMPLEMENTED

Unusual creatures are those creatures, currently available in the world, that are not the same graphics as those listed prior. Scorpions, giant snakes, drakes, spiders, and what every additional ones we considering adding that fit with in the general appropriateness of the fiction. (No I don’t have that list, if I did I would have posted it, so please don’t bug me for a list of them now.)

Unusual creatures will have a varied list of skills levels and stats, and most will be tamable with a skill of 90 or higher. Additionally unusual creatures will have special attacks, such as poison, cast web, fire breath, etc.

Unusual creatures’ skills:

Can be trained through usage

Can not have training purchased for them

Can be trained - no skill cap

Summoned Creatures

Summoned creatures are included in your total number of controllable creatures. The number of creatures you can summon is further limited by your magery skill.

Using Your Creatures

Raising combat skills

All three types of tamable creatures will get better the more you use them. By hunting with your creatures you will raise their combat skills.

  • The skill cap for Common and Bred creatures is 120 on all skills.

  • There is no skill cap for Unusual creatures.

Additionally, for Raised and Bred creatures ONLY, you will be able to purchase training for your creatures. Training costs 1/10th of the current cost for players.  Creatures that are NOT stabled, mounted or dead, will continue to train while the player is off-line.

To train a bred/raised creature, go to any NPC and drop money on them.  At the bottom of the training list you will see a blue button to "Train a Pet". This allows you to train your tamed creature.

Companions

We have also introduced a companion system for bred/raised and common creatures. Companions won’t go wild, and they can be specially trained, once specialty training is implemented.  Companions also do not have a resurrection count, unlike other tamed creatures, they can be resurrected an unlimited number of times.

You can have one companion (at a time) with the Animal Taming skill from 60 to 90, two from 91 to 105 and three from 106 to 120. This does not mean that if you have a skill of 80, you can have one companion in the bank, at home, in deed, whatever and one with you. One means one.

Special training - NOT YET IMPLEMENTED

Through the use of experience points, players will be able to purchase a variety of special “teaching methods” that they can use to train their companions. These special abilities will cost about what the other class abilities cost, and the player will be able to teach these abilities to any companion they get. This means they only have to buy it once, and then they can teach it to any companion they ever have.

Using Veterinary

The veterinary skill gives you a greater understanding of the creature you are trying to tame. While it does not improve your chances to actually tame the creature, it will decrease your chances of angering the creature. The last thing you want to do is anger a hostile creature you are trying to tame.

When healing a pet, veterinary acts as anatomy does on a player.  See the veterinary skill description for more details.

Taming and Bards

Trying to tame an angered creature takes time to calm the creature and get it to listen. If you are a bard you can pacify the creature with music and can get it to listen to you faster.

Provocation can also be used against the bigger creatures. For example, provoke  one creature onto another, then tame away. If you anger the dragon, run, heal and try again.

Commands

Kill/Attack

Your pet to attack the target you select.

Stop

Your pet will stop all other commands. If in combat you may have to repeat this command many times.

Come

Your pet will walk up to you as long as they are in "earshot".

Follow

Your pet will follow you where ever you go. This can also be used to have your pets follow someone else. Use “All follow” to get all your pets to follow you. Use “pet name follow” to get one specific pet to follow you.

Transfer

Changes ownership of the pet. The new owner must have skill sufficient to tame the creature. You can only transfer ownership of a pet to another PC. NPC's and inanimate objects are not valid targets for transfer. You can not transfer ownership of a totem animal while it is in animal form. You have to release it to totem form and hand it to the new owner.

Release

Allows the creature to go wild. This command must stand alone. It can not be part of a sentence. If you release a high level tamable creatue like a dragon you will get a yes/no prompt to be sure you want to do that.

Guard

Your pet will defend you if you are attacked. You can also tell your pet to defend another player if they are attacked

Fetch/Get

Tells your pet to go get an item and come back.

Drop

Tells your pet to drop any items they are carrying

Speak

Your pet will say something (if capable) or make noise (if they don't speak)

Stay

Useful only after the stop command is issued, prevents your pet from wandering around
