Criminals and Outcasts
Criminals inside the walls of Lethe'aime are virtually unheard of. The mages
inside of the walls spend a great deal of time studying, training, honing their
magical skill to pass the tests to become Asoi, and their needs are provided
for.
Also, there are no needs for guards, for two reasons, the first being that
murder and thievery are unheard of inside the fortified walls which prevent any
illegal entrance and exit, and the second being that the mages are usually quite
potent, capable of protecting themselves rather well. Outside the walls,
however, is another story altogether.
Outside the walls of Lethe'aime are many small slums clumped together to form
one fairly large, poor town. The people live hand to mouth, scratching a living
by any means necessary. Prostitution, drinking, gambling, drugs, and murder, all
commonplace in the dusty slums of the slum town of Lethe’aime, where there are
no laws, and no guards to enforce them. Here, thievery is an everyday sight.
Merchant caravans passing through Lethe'aime often hire brute squads to defend
the caravan from brigands who assault them before they reach the city limits.
While inside the city, they often find themselves victims of armed robbery,
assaults, beatings, and other crimes more severe in nature. Therefore, it is
rare to see merchants traveling through without one or even several bodyguards
with them.
"Many a merchant been killed and left ta rot in the streets for not handin' over
their purses to the blades, their corpses servin' as a reminder to any 'oo pass
through 'ere that they best do as told, lest this night it's your money AND your
life..."
