Daijiin-Ron - Life slave of the MotherSitting quietly under a tree its limbs dancing rhythmically from the light breeze of the after- noon. Korlenmyr thought back to the actions of the morning that had so shattered her life. No not shattered, changed, and focused her life along a path that she had never dreamed for herself. Approaching the prayer arch she knelt and said a quick prayer before entering the house of the seer. She paused to light 3 candles on the left side of the entry way, one for the Mother, one for her ancestors, and one for luck on this trip on the wheel of life. Turning to her right she dips one finger into a bowl of water then into a bowl of fine sand, water and soil; the sustainers of life from the mother. Walking slowly down the darkened hall, she quietly says the appropriate prayers that the seer will be able to set her feet upon the path the mother has chosen for her. Entering into the small room painted silks hang from every wall. Small masks and bits of this and that stuck here and there make the room feel small and cluttered. Kneeling on the pillow sitting next to the door she bowed her head in prayer until the seer entered. So lost in her prayers and inner thoughts she wasn't even aware that the seer had entered and was kneeling across from her. Glancing up Korlenmyr forces herself to sit calmly though inside she jumped, startled at not having heard the seer enter. Looking at Korlenmyr, her face covered with a thin gauzy off-yellow silk scarf, the seer nodded to her and held her old thin hand out. Korlenmyr handed her the usual offering of 3 coins, some small bits of bone and a locket of her own hair. She watched as the seer rolled them around in the palm of her hand; slowly and with her head hung low, a soft murmur was heard coming from behind one of the silk hangings. After what seemed to Korlenmyr to be an eternity the seer cast the items onto
the floor between them. Watching them bounce and scatter to a stop. Studying the
bits for but a brief second the seer looks at Korlenmyr and in a hushed whisper
of a voice she said, "Alassara the Mother blesses you well, your footsteps upon
the wheel will echo for all to hear. Go to the temple tomorrow morning and
present your self there that the Sinjo might guide your steps. Cha'ysth Alassara,
may the Mother honor and bless you. Stunned almost beyond words she bowed and
rose saying, "Ja'itsth may the Mother honor and bless you as well." The temple was quiet, so still that not even a breeze moved the flames of the candles on the Alter. Kneeling in silent prayer to Ji'Kalna, the Sinjo swayed side-to-side following the rhythm of some unheard song. At an unseen signal from the Sinjo a line of young Jillhani walk out of a side door to stand in a circle around him. Rising gracefully to his feet the Sinjo moves to the first Jillhani and looks directly into his eyes. With there eyes locked on each other the Sinjo drove his fist into the Jillhani's stomach. His breath whooshing from the force of the blow as the Jillhani straightens him self-back up; the Sinjo shakes his head and a lower temple servant leads the Jillhani away. Turning to the next Jillhani the Sinjo flips a kick into his head the force of the blow knocking out a tooth. Looking at the Jillhani the Sinjo again shakes his head. Turning to the third Jillhani, the Sinjo looks into his eyes, then glances at the Jillhani next to him; palm thrusting her under the chin picking her up off of her feet and sending her flying onto her back. Landing hard the forth Jillhani rolls over backward springing lightly to her feet. The blood flowing from her split lip going unnoticed as she focuses all of her anger and rage on the Sinjo. With a smile the Sinjo looks into her eyes seeing the faint red flicker in them and waves all the others to leave them in the temple. Breathing hard the last young Jillhani watches the Sinjo intently, her focus attentively locked on him. She watches the Sinjo kneel and she follows suit feeling the peace of the temple once again flow into her and relax her. After a time of silent prayer the Sinjo motions for the young Jillhani to follow him to the Dojo. Pointing to a place next to his cushion, the Sinjo sits looking at her. "Tell me Daijiin-Ron what is your given name?" The Sinjo asked directly yet quietly. Startled by the title that the Sinjo had used, the Jillhani answered in a stunned almost shocked voice. "Ji’ssis am Korlenmyr of the third house.” After letting Korlenmyr sit nervously for a few moments, the Sinjo rose and looked sternly at her. "Let us see if you have the blessing of the Mother as well as the spirit of a Daijiin-Ron" Leading Korlenmyr deeper into the Dojo they enter a little used room unlike most of the other training areas. This room poorly lit by four braziers burning in each corner of the room. There fire added to the already stifling heat of the room. Pointing to a rack of weapons on one side of the room the Sinjo waited for Korlenmyr to select a blade of her liking. Once chosen, the Sinjo pointed to a place in the center of the room. Turning, Sinjo headed towards the door, grinning slightly. Korlenmyr dumbfounded, watched the Sinjo as he walked away. As the Sinjo reached for the doorknob Korlenmyr found her voice to ask a question, "Sinjo what am I to do here?" Turning back towards her the sly grin still on his lips the Sinjo just answered with just one word, "Survive." As the door shut, the bolt on the other side of the door sliding into place rang like a temple bell in the hot dark room. An unseen door in the back of the room, its rusty hinges screaming into the room as it opened and shut. Turning towards the sound, Korlenmyr took an involuntary step backwards as she saw not one but two Torlek beasts slinking there way into the room. She noticed the great dragons' three talon feet leaving great gouges in the marble floor. Their razor sharp teeth almost shining in the small dimly lit room. The Torlek so big, to look eye to eye would of taken two full grown men standing atop the other's shoulders. The dragons were both feared and prized for they’re fierce fighting abilities. Most beasts and all sane men gave the great beasts plenty of room when found in the wild without a hunting party present. Holding her blade in front of her, Korlenmyr tried to slowly creep back toward the door, hoping to move slowly enough that the Torlek would not see her movements. Seeing the great swamp dragons split up, one moving to the left the other to the right, Korlenmyr stopped moving and tightened her sweaty grip on the swords hilt. As one of the dragons hung back, the other leapt forward slashing one great talon foot at her. Diving to one side Korlenmyr slashes out with her sword barely nicking the shoulder of the beast. Bringing her blade back up to make another swing, Korlenmyr didn’t see its barbed tail swing at her legs. The inch long barbs, slicing her right thigh deeply; grimacing from the wound, Korlenmyr tried again to edge her way back towards the door. Only to see the way barred by the other Torlek beast. He had quietly edged his way around to block the only way from the room. Moving to keep both the beasts within her line of sight, Korlenmyr put her back to the wall and tried to figure out what her next move should be. Unfortunately for Korlenmyr the first Torlek beast took the choice of options out of her hand as it reared back on its hind feet and slashed at her with its front talons. Using all of her skill and a bit of luck, Korlenmyr was able to avoid most of the blows but two, they landed solidly one on the side of the head, letting blood flow freely down her head and neck, the other leaving 3 great gashes across her chest. As the pain and loss of blood hit her an almost unnatural calm settled over her, a calmness that seemed to flow thru her like a cool spring on a summer’s day. Looking at the beast with a hazy blue tinged vision Korlenmyr knew exactly what she needed to do to separate her from this problem. Moving with surprising speed forward and to one side of the beast, Korlenmyr slid her blade up to slice its chest open in a huge gash. As the beast tried to swipe at her she flipped up and over the beast to lay open the other side of the Torlek with her blade. As the beast reared back away from her, Korlenmyr rolled forward and drove her blade deep into its chest. Feeling the blade slide into its heart its faltering beats vibrated up the blade and into her hands. As the beast slumped to one side Korlenmyr removed her blade and looked directly at the other beast which had moved closer toward her. Leveling a blue tinged stare at the beast, it wisely gave her wide room and slinked its way back thru the doors thru with which it had entered. As the doors to the Torlek’s room closed, Sinjo reentered the room walking past the dead beast and right up to Korlenmyr. With eyes hard and cold as steel, yet still filled with the warmth of compassion and wisdom, Sinjo locked his gaze into Korlenmyr’s eyes until the blue tinge faded and her sword arm grew weak and tired and the sword wavered. Then reaching out lightly the Sinjo takes the sword and tosses it aside. Kneeling on the floor waves for her to do the same. As they both kneel the Sinjo watches as Korlenmyr slowly controls her breathing and settles into a relaxed pose. After a few minutes of this the Sinjo looks at her and asks, "Why did you kill the beast?" Cocking her head Korlenmyr thinks and answers, "It was a threat, it sought my life, and it sought to escape into the city to harm the children of the mother." Nodding to himself the Sinjo again asked a question, "The other beast, why did you not also take its life as you did its mate?" At the word mate Korlenmyr winced a bit but answered, "thou strong and fierce the Torlek posed not a threat to me nor to the city beyond so there was no need to take its life." He nods watching the answers of her face more then the answers of her voice. "And why did you not stop me from removing the blade from your hand even thou you were filled with the spirit of the Daijiin-Ron?" Puzzled by the Sinjo's question. Thinking back, to reexamine herself and her thoughts at the moment Sinjo had removed the blade from her hand. And thou it made no since she knew the answer and replied, "Sinjo I knew that you meant me no threat. I knew deep inside that you were not going to harm me, that you were not a threat to our people. It was like I could feel your intent, your emotions broke over me like the waves on a rugged beach." Shaking her head as if to clear it, she looked at the learned wise man. With a smirk of one who opens an oyster looking for a meal and finds instead a rare pearl the Sinjo says, "And that Daijiin-Ron was the real test." "Any great warrior can swing a blade in combat. There are many blessed by the Mother with the battle fever. But only one of her true called are gifted enough to glimpse the world thru her eyes. To feel as she would to have a bond with our giver of life, the Mother. Come Korlenmyr you must retire to the meditation glade before the ritual of cleansing. Only then can your service begin.” |
