SlaveryOne becomes a slave by being captured in war, by committing certain crimes, such as stealing or failure to pay debt, by voluntarily entering into slavery, or by being sold by one's parents. If a slave was caught during war or is sold because of poverty slavery is not a bad thing as the slave’s master would feed, clothe, and house the slave in return for his work. A slave is required to wear a collar at all times that is ritualistically placed on the slave by his master. The ritual includes being seen before the master completely naked before having the collar placed around the new slave’s neck. The master will then bathe the slave’s neck from a water basin which is done to symbolize the purity in thought the new slave will show towards his new master. The slave is then told expectations of his slavery and dressed in clothes of the master’s choosing. Expectations of slaves vary widely from master to master and are reflective of the background of the master who enslaves them. The Ji’Ken are most likely to take a slave for the ability to serve them in domestic functions such as cooking the fish they catch or cleaning their houses on the river, or if possible sometimes a more wealthy Ji’Ken will take a child into slavery at the request of a neighbor as an act of good will and then in return feed the family from which the master received the slave from. The Ji’Ken if unhappy with the slave are known to place a curse upon the slave and set him free deep within the jungle where the slave will suffer the wraith of poverty and Ji’kalna for the sin of not being a good slave. If a slave finds his way back to a village after being cast out he is looked down upon with dishonor and shunned. The Ji’Coi are most likely to choose beautiful women for their slaves as it gives them a deep feeling of satisfaction to feel as if they own such a piece of beauty. They treat their slaves well though they have been known to loan them cheaply to a friend or even a foe for a night in order to get favors in return. Because the Ji’Coi cherish the aesthetic beauty of their slaves they often send them off with a small coin purse and their blessing if the slave becomes damaged in any physical way or becomes less attractive to them. The Ji’Mal often have slaves as it is an example to others of how wealthy and noble they are. The slave is below the concubine and regarded as basic property to the Ji’Mal. If it is found a slave has a certain talent for cooking, tailoring, or any other craft, it is not uncommon for the master to trade him to another. The Ji’Mal do have body slaves which are still below the concubine and regarded only for their ability to care for their masters personal grooming. The Ji’Mal are toughest on their slaves as their expectations are very high. It is not uncommon for a Ji’Mal to beat a slave into submission or as punishment if the master feels the slave is not living up to his standards. (It would be considered distasteful for a Ji'Mal to have physical relationships with a slave, particularly a foreigner. A slave would be raised to the status of concubine, and trained, before they would be considered worthy enough to lay with.) Slavery is not permanent unless the slave signs a contract which says it is so, but it is only through proving that one is a worthy slave that one has a chance at becoming free. If a slave runs it is considered dishonorable and the slave will either be hunted down and hung.
