Ji'Ken Rite of Fire

(The Eyes of Rage of Ji'Kalna, loosely based on the Aztec rite of the sun.)

The Ji'Ken with their almost Voudun based rites often practice what to any outsider would say primitive. This rite, employed by Ji'Ken warriors has a unique blend of beauty and harshness. The Priestess will often look on to the rite either in silence or leading the almost rabid frenzy of the drum. All participants are adorned in splendorous outfits composed of leopard skins, and peacock or pheasant feathers. In the center of the circle will be a brazier carved from river stone in a likeness of an angered serpentine face. The fire is small but strong. The priestess will then "smudge" the rite area with incense made from the various flora of the region. Another priestess will have a couple flute varieties, one of which when blown makes only an angered hissing sound of what they say is the voice of Ji'Kalna.

The rite begins as all participants in the dance as it were are evenly spaced in an almost circular fashion. The dance begins on the down stroke of the third beat and begins with one revolution of the dance circle, clockwise. The strides taken by the dancers/warriors are long and almost feline and upon the completion of one revolution the drum beat goes from a slow hypnotic beat to a frenzied fury. At the beginning of the second cycle of the dance (after first revolution) the dancers will hop and spin to their left. After which they will dance in an almost frenzied state, making 6 steps counterclockwise, hop and spin to their right and do this same dance but to the right not left. Next step is a complete spin upon their right foot, spinning left, weapon in hand. Following they are to repeat said step to the left once more, and each participant who lies exactly north of the brazier is to step to the center of the circle, kneel and place their hand above the fire as a sign of their faith in the rage of Ji'Kalna to not burn them, but fuel their hearts to exact her will.

Each in turn will make this affirmation and should one who does such earn the attention of Ji'Kalna, the flame will rise and lick not only the palm of their hand but the top as well. Upon this attention, the circle then becomes even more enraptured by the savage beat of the drum and will spin faster and more violently, and upon the chosen one's second presentation to the fire, they will not kneel, rather they will remove their sandal of their right foot and with show of skill, will hold his foot over the fire, spinning on the ball of his left foot, as the fire climbing up his leg threatens to burn him but will not. At this point the voice of the serpent flute will be used to voice 6 long angered hisses and at the end of the sixth hiss the drum will make one downbeat at which point all participants will take a knee and end.

This rite is employed prior to any battle the Ji'Ken are to take part in as it is known to whip their warriors into a savage ferocity.

Old Notes

Ceremony

shrouded mists, haze, serene music or chanting, the high priest/priestess let's their blood in the midst of the ceremony - to the point of fainting,.... it falls into a vessel containing the venom of a serpent (which bring about visions) ... ingested at the height of the ceremony... everything becomes still and quiet... and the priest/priestess speaks the words of the Goddess

Personalize Guidance

Seeking out the goddesses wisdom, Not so fancy or elaborate

... a ritual candle lit, blood let into the vessel... which is then ingested and drank - candles and venom can be gotten from your local temple/shrine for a small donation or tamers could gather the venom

Pilgrimage

I was thinking a pilgrimage thing where they must climb the steps to the temple and do something significant each step... kiss the ground - a snake, utter a prayer - and at the top perform a blood letting sacrifice, either that - or do that on the way to a sacred river and do the bloodletting at the river their blood feeds the god - or something...

Others

  1. Delay of mourning periods of at least 7 days built on superstition of the spirits of loved ones or house members not wanting to leave if mourned too soon and will result in haunting and the spirit not finding it's way back to Ji'Kalna. Those not able to restrain their emotions for the set amount of time bring much shame upon their house and prove themselves weak in the eyes of Ji'Kalna.
  2. Bonding of the hands with black and/or red cloth after death until the funeral ceremony is performed built on superstition that the spirit of the dead must stay in place and not allowed it to wander until proper ceremony can be conducted to send spirit on its way to Ji'Kalna.
  3. Belief that elder priests and priestesses must give up their identities so they are no longer thought of as members of any house and are thought to be closer to Ji'Kalna that way belonging solely to her.
