I-Ching - Coin CastingI Ching translated as the Book of Changes is used as a form of divination to determine the changing forces that are happening around a given situation. The I ching consists of the two complementary opposites, yin and yang. These represent odd / even, masculine / feminine, positive / negative, day / night. In ancient times yin was the shaded north side of a hill, whereas yang was the sunny south side. Yang governs all things masculine, positive, heaven, hard, moving and living. Yin governs all things feminine, negative, earthly, soft, static and non-living. The I ching consist of Yin and Yang but these are said to have gave birth to the four primary symbols. An extra line is then added to each of these symbols to create the eight trigrams which relate to the eight directions of space. To divine using coins first you will need 3 coins, a sheet of paper and a pen. The three coins are cast and a note is made to whether they are heads(yang) or tails(yin), this is carried out 6 times to obtain the specific meaning, called a hexagram. Ch’ien (Creativity: Heaven Above Heaven Below) - Now is the time to achieve success by pressing forward. Be bold without letting yourself become reckless. It is possible that a powerful and perhaps aggressive person will bring about a resolution of the situation or problem that you are enquiring about, for this is the most strongly masculine of all the hexagrams. Chen (Thunderclap: Thunder Above Thunder Below) - A time of surprises and unexpected events. These will be both good and bad so take time to think about your decisions and why you make them. Chi Chi (Completion Achieved: Water Above Flame Below) - Be prepared for the totally unexpected, even if everything in your life seems harmonious and ordered. This is not yet the time to relax, overconfidence will cause your hold on order to slip. Chia Jen (Family: Wind Above Flame Below) - Loyalty is called upon in your present circumstances. Be true to those around you, especially blood-ties. Even though this is not always easy and may feel burdensome, this is not the time to shirk your responsibilities. Chieh (Limitation: Water Above Lake Below) - You are experiencing a period in your life called "limitation". Even though it may feel like you are constantly struggling and striving to survive, if you accept these restraints life will become easier. Sometimes it is best to stop trying to fight the current and letting it take you with it instead. Chien (Gradual Advance: Wind/Wood Above Mountain Below) - Here we are being warned against hasty or rash actions and decisions, especially those that involve influencing others. Be prepared to wait patiently for the situation to develop at a natural rate, rather than forcing it to happen. Ch'ien (Modesty: Earth Above Mountain Below) - The present situation calls for a calm and peaceful attitude to be successful. If you remain calm in the face of adversity little harm will come to you. Persist quietly with your plans and much good fortune will follow. Chien (Obstruction: Water Above Mountain Below) - There are too many obstacles for you to make any progress on your path. Retreat and avoid all direct confrontations. You should also seek the aid of those you trust. This is similar to hexagram 33, it could be helpful to read that interpretation also. Chin (Progress: Flame Above Earth Below) - You have considerable influence in the matter you are enquiring about. Be sure not to abuse this power for your own advantage. By using your influence to help those around you as well as yourself, you will be so much more in control of the situation. Ching (The Well: Water Above Wind/Wood Below) - Now is the time to draw strength and inspiration from the past. Both from your own experiences and tribulations and that of your ancestors who have come before you. Learn from the past and build a better future. Chun (Birth Pangs: Water Above Thunder Below) - The beginnings of new relationships, new ventures and new situations are never without difficulties and at times you may feel discouraged. Metaphorically speaking, you sometimes feel as though the sprouting seed corn you just planted is about to be blasted by the frost. In spite of this, all your difficulties can be overcome with persistence. Do not be too self reliant, afraid or unwilling to ask for help or advice. Outside help can ensure the success of new projects. Chung Fu (Truth: Wind Above Lake Below) - Understanding. Do not lose your temper quickly. Explain your actions and be patient. Communication is the keyword for getting through to people who may have difficulty picking up or following what you are trying to say. Feng (Abundant Prosperity: Thunder Above Flame Below) - Symbolizing happiness and fulfillment this is an extremely fortunate hexagram to cast. Associated with all things good, plentiful and successful now is a good time to embark on new projects or expect favorable results to something nearing completion. Fu (Return: Earth Above Thunder Below) - The time is one for change, abandon old habits, worn-out emotions and attitudes that have led you astray. As far as your particular problem is concerned now is not the time to be afraid about embarking into unknown territory. Heng (Continuance: Thunder Above Wind Below) - All your powers of endurance and persistence are called upon right now. It is important for you to stand fast and use all your energy to resist the storms that blow all around you. Remember that being steadfast to your principles does not mean being obstinate. Hsiao Ch'u (Restraint: Wind Above Heaven Below) - This is warning us not to take on more than we can handle. Major changes or undertakings should be avoided and the small things should be built upon for the future. Hsiao Kua (Small Successes: Thunder Above Mountain Below) - Smallness in excess. Concentrate on minor problems right now as large ones will be too much. Be cautious and content in yourself. Try to avoid pettiness. Hsieh (Liberation: Thunder Above Water Below) - This is the time for boldness. Face up to all your problems and obstacles, sweeping them aside. The future is the most important thing, don't get caught up with the mistakes of the past. Hsien (Mutual Attraction: Lake Above Mountain Below) - You are about to experience or are experiencing many of the pleasant things in life. You are advised not to be swept of your feet in the excitement but retain your inner calm and listen to the advice of those close. Keep your thoughts clear and your mind unmuddied. Hsu (Contemplation: Water Above Heaven Below) - Sincerity and persistence are called for. If you show both, you will be successful and achieve the ends you desire. You must, however, be decisive in your dealings. Huan (Dispersion: Wind Above Water Below) - Be careful and proceed selflessly. Ensure that your actions aren't selfish and remain honest. If you want to attain your goals you must be prepared to work with the co-operation of others. I (Increase: Wind Above Thunder Below) - "To Rule is to Serve" is the message of this hexagram. If you remain aware of the needs and desires of those round you, you will manage to make greater progress with your own aims and requirements. I (Nourishment: Mountain Above Thunder Below) - Great prudence and moderation are required to succeed. Take care with all aspects of your life, health, finances and emotions. Don't allow yourself to be distracted - take care of those things that are of great importance and need to be done. K’an (The Deep: Water Above and Water Below) - Stick to your principles and don't compromise your ideals in your present situation. Although things may seem bad and you may be tempted to abandon certain principles to conquer adversity, you are urged not to. Success will be possible if you remain true to your integrity and beliefs. K’uei (Disunity: Flame Above Lake Below) - You will experience personal difficulty through the obstruction of others. These obstructions are not through malice and should not be taken personally, the person in question is only being sincere to their own point of view. It is best to come to a compromise in this stalemate. K’un (Oppression: Lake Above Water Below) - This is a difficult phase of your life. Nothing seems to be going right and adversity is all around. Even though the smallest things seem to erupt into problems we should cheerfully continue. By not being disheartened by these obstacles you will manage to turn them to your advantage and pull through this bad patch. K’un (Quiescence: Earth Above Earth Below) - Persistence and endurance are the watchwords of the moment, particularly where financial and other practical situations are concerned. Provided you do not lose heart and let yourself be discouraged, your efforts will bring you success on all levels. According to an ancient Chinese sage, this hexagram indicates that the time has come "to find friends in the South and West rather than the North and East". Sometimes this hexagram literally indicates that you should put reliance on those friends that stay to the South or West of your home. Most usually, however, the injunction must be interpretated in accordance with ancient symbolism; in this case it simply means: "don't relax; intense and patient effort is called for". This hexagram is the most feminine of all the symbols and can sometimes signify that a subtle and perhaps mysterious person might be the means for solving your problems. Ken (Keeping Still: Mountain Above Mountain Below) - Now is a time of stillness in your life. You have either come to the conclusion of a project or are about to. This is the small periods of rest that come amid the rush of life. Enjoy this period of inactivity, gather your thoughts and energy before embarking on your next part of the journey. Ko (Revolution: Lake Above Flame Below) - Change, upheaval and new situations are the keywords of this trigram. We are urged to adapt to our surroundings, to stop swimming against the current and allow it to carry us slightly further on our journey. Kou (Temptation: Heaven Above Wind Below) - You will be particularly receptive to the advice of others right now. You will also find that this advice seems to be coming from everywhere, but be warned, if you follow any of this advice it will result in the worst. Rely on your own judgment - be yourself! Ku (Decay: Mountain Above Wind Below) - The situation or problem you are enquiring about seems to be messy and muddled. This is not due to chance but rather human error. The damage can be repaired though, with thoughtful planning and decision making it is possible to have a happy conclusion. Kuai (Determination: Lake Above Heaven Below) - Now is the time for determination, resolve and strength when carrying out your plans. This determination must be carried out with goodwill rather than being competitive or self-absorbed. Try to centre on becoming a better person and eliminate your own faults rather than those of others. Kuan (Contemplation: Wind Above Earth Below) - Reflection and contemplation are this trigrams keywords. We should examine our own selves rather than being concerned with the outside world. Carefully consider your emotions, desires and ambitions before making any decisions. Kuei Mei (The Marrying Maiden: Thunder Above Lake Below) - Now is the time for being tactful and taking care not to offend those close. To ensure that everything works out successfully we are being warned to stay hidden and safe. Do not push yourself to the front or open yourself up to criticism or hostility, remain cautious. Li (Fire: Flame Above Flame Below) - Limitations and constraints surround us both in our own personal attitudes and those imposed by society. If these limitations are realised and understood this will bring its own freedom. We must come to terms with the world we live in and realize that we can't always achieve all that we desire. Lin (Conduct: Earth Above Lake Below) - Everything is beginning to move, both good and bad. All the forces in your life are deciding to come more into play. Now is the time to keep check of all things negative and be on guard against all things unhelpful or unwanted. Lu (The Traveling Stranger: Flame Above Mountain Below) - Even though you may be feeling relaxed and happy about your present situation in life, this is reminding you not to become too complacent as life is uncertain. With life being unpredictable and forever changing this hexagram advises us to maintain our vigilance and to continue to make plans to ensure happiness and stability. Lu (Treading: Heaven Above Lake Below) - The present situation is not a good one. It feels as though the odds are stacked against you right now. Yet success can still be achieved if you don't allow yourself to be disheartened by these obstacles. The time has come for you to make up your mind, to come to a definite decision by yourself. Min I (Advancing Darkness: Earth Above Flame Below) - Your present situation probably seems unlucky and you feel quite unhappy. Try not to become depressed or let life sweep you away. Try to hold onto clear thought and your inner light to guide you through the gloom. P’I (Stagnation: Heaven Above Earth Below) - Prepare for a period of confusion and bewilderment as life takes on an uncertain quality. Try to be true to what you believe and try not to be easily influenced by others advice, as they may not have your true interests at heart. Pi (Gracefulness: Mountain Above Flame Below) - There is a time for breaking the rules and a time for sticking to them almost religiously. Now is the time for the latter. Be conventional in your attitude and actions to avoid confrontation and unwelcome energies. Pi (Unity” Water Above Earth Below) - This is telling you that you need to give to be able to receive. If you share or help those round you, they will be more willing to help you in return. Sometimes this hexagram is read as the need to cast again. That reading is then used to tell you whether or not you need to actively seek the help of others. Po (Shedding: Mountain Above Earth Below) - Do not undertake any new projects or undertakings. Any present projects should be allowed to tick away as forced progression will result in disaster. Remain calm and thoughtful and try not to take any of your problems head on. To see success you should sit tight, conserve energy and wait for the storm to pass. Sheng (Pushing Upwards: Earth Above Wind/Wood Below) - The present situation calls for decisive actions and all your abilities. If you decide to ignore this advice prepare yourself for an extremely tiring, stressful and risky time. Sun (Decrease: Mountain Above Lake Below) - Restraint and control are called for in every aspect of your life. Only move with the utmost care and draw on your inner reserves. By doing so you will ensure the situation comes to a fruitful conclusion. Sun (The Penetrating Wind: Wind/Wood Above Wind/Wood Below) - Here we are reminded that "time is the great healer". We are prompted to follow the plans we have already set out and stick to them doggedly until progress is made. This hexagram speaks of patience and persistence in achieving one's goals. Sung (Conflict: Heaven Above Water Below) - Take care; don't make any sudden and irrevocable decisions; don't act without much consideration. It is the time for caution. It tells us of success and happiness especially in questions relating to love, sexual matters and marriage. If you think of others rather than yourself the outcome will be more favorable for everyone involved. Ta Ch’u (Restrained Power: Mountain Above Heaven Below) - Now is not the time for self analysis or withdrawing into yourself. Don't sit brooding about your own problems or those of others. Try to be outgoing and enthusiastic, throwing your energy into work and social situations. By doing this you should be able to achieve that which you thought was presently impossible. Ta Chuang (Great Power: Thunder Above Heaven Below) - This is a favorable casting. Your situation should prove to be successful as long as you consider your actions and how they affect others. By helping others they in turn will help you to achieve a happy conclusion. Ta Kuo (Excess: Lake Above Wind/Wood Below) - You are living in quite an exceptional time of your life. An enormous effort will have to be made to fully cope with everything that is happening. The situation calls for effort of a constant nature rather than that of powerful bursts to be most successful. It is likely that if such help is sought it will provide the answers to whatever particular problem you are experiencing. Ting (The Cauldron: Flame Above Wind/Wood Below) - We are being advised not to be too adventurous, outgoing or do anything unexpected. Life will work more in your favor if you maintain a low profile and appear to be more conventional. To ensure successful fruition, it is best to seek the advice of friends and family. Tui (Joyousness: Lake Above Lake Below) - It is possible that you may not realise how good things are for you at the moment.
