At the table during meal times in the typical Ji'Mal (Noble) table one can expect entertainment at every meal. Ji'Mal chefs usually make a great show preparing dishes before the table as a show of skill and so all can see the ingredients. The Ji'Mal meals consist of several courses ranging from soups to appetizers to spicy main dishes to sweet desserts. Each Ji'Mal chef creates foods that are as visually pleasing as they are tasteful. Ji'Mal diners will use enamel coated and intricately decorated sticks to eat certain courses with and other times use the very tips of the thumb, index and middle fingers for others. Meal time for the Ji'Coi (inner Noble) is much the same as it is at a Ji'Mal table only the tables are set in a central area so that all may watch the chefs create their separate dishes although not as many courses as the Ji'Mal. The same utensils are found at the Ji'Coi tables as are seen at Ji'Mal tables. Ji'Ken often begin preparations for meals throughout the day placing something in a pit oven to slow roast through the day and make the sauces to compliment it with just before meal times. Meal times for the Ji'Ken are used to go over the happenings for the day and sometimes plan for the next. Often Ji'Ken use a type of flatbread made of rice to place the main dish in and roll it up to eat or will use their finger tips as the Ji'Mal do. After meals it is not uncommon for the Elder Juba to read tea leaves and make predictions for those in attendance while everyone eats their desserts. |
