Criminals and Outcasts

Jillhani in Lethe'aime

To be a shamed Jillhani is to experience a living hell. A fate often worse than death, and those who find themselves banished from their homeland often beg a judgment of death, and in actuality consider it mercy. But the torture a shamed one endures is not in the physical, but instead the emotional and psychological. This script will detail the life of a shamed one from the preparation for the ceremony, to the reason behind endless grief one such as this experiences in journal form.

The Abduction

I have been in shackles for four days. And now have been left alone in the plains of Akroth for my sins. When they came for me, no mercy was shown. They jerked my wife from my arms, and demanded that my children sit upon their knees and watch as they drug me outside. Ji'Kalna's warriors from the temple, ordered by the Priestess in the name of the Serpentine Goddess, fulfilled their duty without question. When they had me outside of the safety of my home, they threw me into the path, sliding me face first into the dust.

My wife cried from the door, before I had time to lift my head from the ground and spit the Earth from my mouth, a powerful armored hand grabbed me by my top-knot and pulled me to my knees. He held my hair roughly in his grasp as the other religious warriors stared on spitting curses at me. He used a short katana and cut my top-knot from my head and threw it on the ground at my feet, then tied my hands together behind my back.

They took me to the temple atop the great mountain. It's cold stone stairs and floor sapping my will to struggle. The priestess' stood along the sides of the great hall, their colorful masks adorned with the feathers of jungle birds hid their expression of silent scorn.

To the high cliff overlooking the ocean I was drug. They shackled my hands, the iron bracelets were lined on the inside with barbs, and connected to chains some 20 feet long. The chains were secured tightly to a post atop the cliff, and when they were confident the bracelets where tight enough, I was thrust over the cliff to hang above the crashing waves until the ceremony could be arranged. The time spent there with my own blood running down my arms, and the cool mist blowing in my face, was as if Ji'Kalna herself were showing me how alone I would become.

The Ceremony

When I was drug lifelessly atop the cliff to hear my judgment, I was provided a bowl of watered down rice to renew just a bit of my energy so that I could face the Judicator. I was no longer a man possessing a soul and will of my own, and it didn't take a Judicator telling me so to know it. As I was drug limp to the base of the temple, all around men and women stepped from their homes to gaze upon me one last time. As I passed them, I remember looking, imploring to their faces, but no mercy was there... no compassion that I remember so fondly from before. They gazed at me with such disappointment, then one by one turned their back upon me.

I was released when we reached the temple. I fell to my knees not because I was forced to, but because I had not the will to stand any longer as the Judicator emerged. He wore a mask of feathers that concealed his face, I was not even permitted to gaze upon the face of a Priest of Ji'Kalna, but this came as a bit of relief, as I am sure the expression that lie behind it was unforgiving.

The Ceremony did not last long...

"You were never born. You have never lived. You have never loved. You have never existed. You are nameless. You are faceless. You are a figment of a memory now forgotten by your people for you have turned your back upon the Mighty Ji'Kalna.. and for that she has turned her back upon you, and as such... so shall all her children."

They stripped me of any semblance of my House, of my family, of my name, and led me to the border of the badlands of Akroth. Those who took me there took a bit of pity and did not denounce me further, knowing that my punishment had been served, and would be for the rest of my life. I turned to them as they released me with not even a shirt to cover my body. I implored them to hand me a dagger, anything with which to free myself of this pain... this shame.

But they had been given this terrible duty before, and had strict instructions to deny any form with which I might take my own life. No instead my punishment was to live on, outside of my homeland, in a place in which no man trusted me. No one would befriend me, for they knew the reason for my shaven head, and my loneliness, and none would be brave enough to offer me solace and risk the wrath of Ji'Kalna as well.

They turned on their horses and returned to the Great Mountain. And in the cold, alone, I learned what it means to betray the Serpentine Mistress.
