Act or FalterThe young students sat in a circle around their master, Kazzaki was one of the Daijiin-Ron, who after bringing much honor to his family and his goddess had been granted the title of Sinjo. only the old and worthy were given this title, and were held in highest respect by all of the Jillhani. They could do no wrong and had passage into any council and house with in the kingdom. The job was to teach, the young and old sought his wisdom. He taught in the Dojo’s, in the temples, in the streets and under the bows of the Yussi tree. Today he spoke to the youngest of students, from all levels of society – for the words of a Sinjo were for all. Kazzaki waited patiently, some of the smallest children fidgeted in the silence. But Kazzaki did not send them a reproachful look, nor did he look at them at all. Soon foot steps could be heard coming up the stairs in the temple complex and the children turned their heads. Kazzaki did not move. Two servants entered, one carried a large basket and another a clear glass urn filled with deep blue water. They set their burdens on the marble and mosaic flooring before the Teacher. He nodded once respectfully and thanked them for their service. Bowing they quickly left the room. The teacher spoke ... “Are you anxious children?” Most of them nodded nervously. “You waste your energy, with your nervous twitching and wilding racing thoughts. You exhaust yourselves on that which you can not change, and your minds are closed to the whispers of warning. You must not race when you can walk, you must not walk when you can sit, for the voice of fate is but a hiss on the winds. Now be still.” The children quieted, they knew to disobey a Sinjo would bring them shame. Kazzaki tipped over the basket, the top rolled away and three vipers slid slowly out of basket. Quietly Kazzaki continued to speak, “Change can strike quickly, you have two choices when the strike comes ... you can be prepared or you can be surprised.” The children watched the poisonous snakes carefully, but they did not move. The serpents slide around the inner edges of the circle, within easy striking distance. “You have no will, all you have is fate and choice. Tell me children what is fate?” The children did not move, then one spoke watching the closest of the serpents carefully. “Fate is the will of the mother upon us.” The serpent struck, aiming for the young boy who had moved when he spoke. The soft rustle of silk, and the snake was swept carefully out of harms way before it reached the child. Holding the serpent, Kazzaki spoke again “... and what is choice?” Some of the children seemed more confident and others less so but finally a tall girl spoke, her head raised, eyes forward. “Choice is to act or to falter.” This time none of the serpents made a move. Kazzaki began to speak his voice low and melodious. “I have no will except the will of the mother. My fate can only be heard when I am still and listening. I have but two choices, to act or falter. I am the coil, she is the fang. I am the ears, she is the tongue. I am the viper and they are the mouse”. |
