The Lands of the Jillhani
Let me take you on a journey through the kingdom of Bishani. Deep within the rainforest, far from the staggered cliffs that border this lush land, lie the seven villages of the Ji’Ken. I see warn dirt clearings. I see homes raised up safely from the mud and snakes. I see an old woman, rocking and chanting on her porch. I see runes and other kinds of spiritual and voodoo charms laid in front of her. She seems to be consulting them, caressing them, taking power from them. She is warm, she is good. I see her kin, standing about her, watching the spiritual journey and communication quietly. I see them understanding that their lives are not solely in the physical, but there is an active and dynamic spiritual world around them. That all the hues and faces of the Mother buffet and caress their daily lives. I see a man stepping into the clearing, his bearing stark. His mood prominent. I see the old woman watching the man. I see them fight, not with words, not with weapons, but with the very aspects of the Mother. His clan is evil, his people destructive, and he is power hungry. I travel by boat, down this great soft river that flows through the mist and the heat, languid and dangerous. I pull up beside a shallow dock, one of many that borders the foot of Ashi’naa. All along the forked tongue of the river lie docks, warehouses, small taverns and hastily erected shops. Here the river and the forest gnaws away at the buildings. The people use as much brightness and glory as they may to brighten this ever evolving wayside landscape. Gaudy. Like Christmas tree lights in may in southern Texas. Ancient. Like a rusted out Dodge truck. It is here that the River People come when they wish “civilization”, and where the Ji'Coi come when they wish the wilderness. Up a soft slope, we leave most of the jungle behind and my eyes feast upon the soft rolling glades of citrus, mulberry, tea and vineyards. The Ji'Coi, merchants, artisans, honorable, ambitious and the very backbone of the economy. Merchant homes and families are scattered among the carefully tended fields. They meet in the center, flowing into the lower courtyard of the kingdom. Shops, gathering places and all manner of elegance in commerce. I walk the wide marble pathways, passing through red enameled gates. The entertainment has changed, elegant theatres, fancy restaurants and all the other trappings the nobility demand. Back within the aspects of Ji'Kalna there is no known truth to how many aspects she has, but at some time, lost in history, the 5 ancient houses were formed based on her 5 main aspects. They stand near the very pinnacle of the mountain. Small walled fortresses, almost villages in their own right. Gardens, shops, homes, temples and elegance upon honor upon ambition. A child’s game. A game similar to the Dyrlings game of chess, but far more complicated was developed to teach the aspects of the Mother. The five most powerful pieces on the board ( I’ll get you the names later) were the five main aspects of Ji'Kalna. Some move swift, some move soft and some seem to almost never move at all. This is the game that a thousand years ago, from which those noble houses stole the term “The Game” to describe the political machinations of those five great houses. But like any game, there are rules, and for the Jillhani, those rules are honor. Like the pawns of a child’s game, the players do not question what square they stand, for in the end the only thing that matters, is who is left standing.
