Physical Description

A great deal of variety exists within the Dyrlings. They are a hardy folk yet both height, weight and body style can vary significantly. Skin color is typically pale, though not as pale as the Valgarins, having a rosy completion. Yet time in the sun will darken their skin to all shades of tan, while never reaching the darker colors of the Desert People. Hair in most cases has heavy gold and red tones, blonde, copper, auburn, burgundy, gold brown and even reddish black are common. Eye color varies a great deal in the range of common greens, browns, blues, and hazels. Men often wear their hair short or just to shoulder length, though complicated curls and braids are often possible. The length of women’s hair varies significantly, the primary commonality is the complexity of the styles. Hair styles can be anything from looped plaits, to saucy piled high curls, short boyish fairy cuts. The faces of the Dyrlings are delicate and elegant, and hair styles are typically done so as to frame their faces. Additionally, ladies and unmarried maids will decorate their hair with flowers, sparkles and delicate butterfly clips. (The predominance of fairy myths in the culture has made the standard of beauty to be very whimsical, and the ladies encourage this with their choice of dress and hair style.)

Make up is always light, typically chosen for its delicate shimmering qualities rather the straight forward colors. Tattoos and paints if any are almost always of plants or animals, especially birds, cats and butterflies.

Faces: Delicate beauty, rounded chins and pert noses for the women and strong flat noses for the men. Wide eyes and soft lashes. Smooth brows and delicately arched eyebrows. Ears are slightly pointed.

Both men and women, commoner and noble man are lithe and slender until they reach the age of 60.  At 60 they fill out, gaining strong manly shoulders and rich feminine curves.  Men easily gain 40 pounds and the women 20-25.

Magical Nature

Magical potential is something all Dyrlings are born with, it is a natural ability more than a craft. However there are great differences in how much a Dyrling is trained to use their magic. Some only use their magical abilities to enhance weapons or armors they make, to communicate with the animals of the lands, or to shoot an arrow more precisely, while others actually learn to control the elements or entice nature to do their bidding.

Pard Sense

The Pard'wan stepped slowly from the forest onto the dirt road. She had seen many commoners threatened or injured at this crossroad, and knew that many took the danger for granted. Only seconds earlier, she surmised, one of her kin had passed by. He was moving swiftly. She grabbed the earth from his seemingly invisible footprint and examined it. She smiled; he was moving adeptly. He knew the brigands and their archers would be waiting. She knew he would bypass them easily.

"Behind you!" A voice echoed in her head. She wheeled around swiftly to see the withered looking, steel booted Red Caps. She knew they had watched her in curiosity before; she let them. Never before had they been bold enough to approach. This time, something was different, their faces showed determination. "Have I been disturbing your 'game'?" She asked mockingly. With a snarl, the largest of the three held up his clawed hands making a rude gesture at her. In that moment, the young Pard'wan unstrapped her bow and held it at an angle to the ground...no arrow knocked, not pointed to threaten.

Though, within that moment, she had decided to manifest herself. She concentrated on her connection with Athlendyr, and she began to feel her presence expand. To the Red Caps, she seemed to suddenly overshadow them. Not only was she more imposing, but also she seemed to surround them. They felt outnumbered against a lone Pard'wan. With wide eyes and cautious steps, they retreated back down the road. They scratched their heads; she smiled, and vanished into the trees.

Natural Abilities

There are a few natural abilities all Dyrlings possess, that are often called "magical" by outsiders, yet are not seen as such by their kin. One is their ability to "take in" the peace of a beautiful and peaceful place. When they do so, the Dyrlings seem to be in a state of meditation or trance, without letting their guard down though. Doing so gives the Dyrling great peace of mind and raises their spirits. If done for an extended period of time it is even said to heal emotional and physical wounds. An hour of that kind of meditation can replace an entire night's sleep as it will refresh body and mind. Another is the ability to form a close bond with any other kin and communicate with that person through emotional telepathy where general emotions are being transmitted through such a bond. Such bonds often exist between lovers, parents and children, siblings, and close friends. No ritual needs to be done to create such a bond. It naturally develops over time if two individuals of Dyrling blood are sharing mutually strong emotions of love and caring.

Dyrling Ages

The typical point of view of a characters life is regarding childhood "adventure" family, but the Dyrlings are actually do not follow that order. They typically have their children and families young and THEN go out and start their life. The following is the general basis for what ages Dyrlings typically go through.

0 - Late Teens/Early Twenties

Dyrling "children" do a variety of things depending on their general nature. But the one predominant activity is they explore and play like kittens with a yarn ball. Some are serious and thoughtful, some work the farms, some go to school. The raising of Dyrling children is very easy going, there is no rush to teach them all they need to know.

Early Twenties to 33

During this time MOST Dyrlings have married. Dyrlings go from childhood almost directly into marriage. A few choose to take up trades or stay around the villages and help. A few may travel, especially the men to find their path for a few years before 33. Physically they seem to be in their early twenties thru this entire decade.

33 to Sixty

Thirty-three is the official coming of age for Dyrlings. This is when they are considered "mature adults" and typically come into any inheritance they might have had. This is the primary time of industry for Dyrlings. While a few might have gone off adventuring in the previous decade, they most certainly settle down with family and children. The mature from appearing to be in their early twenties to almost 30.

About Sixty

At about Sixty Dyrlings have grown into their full strength and developed rich mature personalities. By this time they have at last children in their early twenties or even grandchildren in their early twenties. It is at this age that Dyrlings shake of the obligations of duty and industry and go out adventuring. They may pick up and move to the city, take up a new trade, going the Den of Athlendyr, run for Mayor, travel to Lethe'aime. Even those who are married will separate easily and willingly as they go off to do what every they have wanted to do. Physically then seem to be about the age of 28-30.

Sixty to 170 Dyrlings by this time have done many things in their life, even if they never left their village. They have now aged to appearing about 60.

170 to 200 Dyrlings have aged to their late 80's and are ready to pass from life. Venerable Dyrlings are looked upon with great great respect and most of the councilors to the king are about this age.

Crafts however can be pursued at any age range, However by the time one generally starts they have prolly BEEN married or are planning on getting married. Now that is not to say every Dyrling is "suppose" to be married, there are lots who have no interest in being married. Just recognize, that just like in history, that's a very rare thing. Also remember that while Dyrlings typically marry for love, they may continue on their own paths later in life. Meaning its perfectly acceptable to be a Paladin and RP that you have a wife at home. It is also acceptable for Dyrlings once they have settled their children to separate to the point of it being seen as divorce. Those that get involved with another person (not their spouse) at this point in their life typically call their new partner "Harvest Wives or Husbands."
