Law and EnforcementDyrlings are Generally a very good natured people and very rarely have to punish someone for breaking a law. When they do, it is a strong punishment. They do not have jails, The usual punishment for a crime is banishment if they do not atone for their crimes, and the one who committed the crime is usually so ashamed, that they do atone, or flee to Queen's Grove. LAWLaws of the Kingdom are formed by the King and his Council of Elders. Individual towns themselves usually have a set of laws of their own as well. Murder and Necromancy are usually met with death, as such crimes are completely against their belief, and is so terrible that to prevent it from happening again, they stop it at the source. Stealing is usually dealt with by the King, often the punishment handed down to an adult depending on the severity is hard labor to pay a debt they now owe to the citizens of Telrae, it can consist of such tasks as hauling manure for farmers, or hauling iron ingots for the smiths in town. Till such time the King has decided their debt is paid to the kingdom. Children do not get punished by the king, but are heavily rebuked by their parents of whom may choose to have their children work and repay their debt to the fellow citizens of their community. Other Laws broken are dealt with on the spot. Banished Dyrlings are few and far between, as most who do a crime atone for it by paying back those hurt, or atoning otherwise. ENFORCEMENTThe Mayor and/or Blacksmith usually administers the punishment for a crime. Or, if such need arises the king and his council may step in and deal with the crime. Only on rare instances will Athlendyr step in himself. Various punishments can include such things as Filling a debt to the community i.e. hard labor Banishment Monetary fines in ranging amounts Property fines, someone caught with stealing crops or slaughtering another's live stock could be forced to give his farm or property to the kingdom as payment for what he took. Public shame, a criminal committing crimes worthy of being shamed such a lying to the king can be punished with public shame which consist of the king giving the criminal something they must wear to mark them as being a shame to the kingdom, the time period is chosen by the king. In the cases of a severe crime, the King or Athlendyr himself may impose a death penalty, though this is quite rare and reserved for the most severe of crimes. |
