InteractionYou are a Stranger here no? Well, I wager that before you leave, you will be like a Cousin to all here. You see things you think Strange? Well perhaps I can tell you what you need to know. But I fear my voice fails me. Perhaps a bit of something to drink would help . . . Ah . .you have refined taste! Are you sure you are not of Telrae? No matter. Sit . . listen! CousinsEvery Dyrling carries a Book of Kin, detailing his relations for as many
generations. With a bit of effort, most any Dyrling can be connected to any
other. "Cousin" is what we call most anyone we meet who is a peer, whom we'd
like to be a peer, or whom we hope to convince is a peer. Aunts, Uncles, Grandmothers, GrandfathersSometimes, it is good to show Respect for another who isn't our Mother or
Father or a King or a Lord. We call such a one Aunt or Uncle. If someone is
deserving of respect, we might even call them Grandfather, even if they are not
really a Grandfather. NoblesOur Nobility is by Birth. Is yours not the same? Our noble families can
trace their lineage back to Athlendyr Himself. The Book of Kin? Why I suppose
that, given enough time and effort, most anyone COULD trace their lineage to
Athlendyr, but . . why would you wish this? There is a saying, "Noblesse
Oblige," "Nobility is Obligated." Those of Noble birth have a great
responsibility to their towns and districts. They must dispense justice, or see
that it is dispensed, they must keep retainers, hold Potlatches, see that the
local Priests and Druids in the region are properly endowed. It is an enormous
task. One would never wish for this, nor wish it upon another. The PardYou notice the man in the corner, the cat at his feet. Do not stare. You see him only because he wishes it. If he did not so wish . . The innkeeper will have none of his coin for meat and drink. They watch. They Wander. Wherever they go, they are welcome. They keep the Paths safe. They wander far and abroad. One day he will be in the City. The next in the distant frontier. Always they wander, always they Watch and Seek. Sometimes in a band, but mostly they travel alone. They also seek for that which is lost...or fleeing. The Queen's GroveSo you have heard of the Queen's Grove? There are some who are Outcast from their Cities and farms. Often they are thieves, but sometimes there are . . other reasons . . . Those who are born there remain. No harm would befall a Child, even among those folk. They might be sent to live with relations, but sometimes . . well, not all are pleased to have a cousin in the Queen's Grove. When they come of age, they journey to the College of Paths . . but some take an apprenticeship. Even there, they have need of skilled Tradesmen. Sora'nauAh . .the Travelers. We live in our wagons, traveling from place to place
through the seasons. We do many different things. A City born who wishes to
take a long journey could do no better than to travel with us. We carry goods
from the sea into the interior. We carry things grown in one region to
another. Mostly townsfolk become townsfolk, and Sora'nau become Sora'nau. But
some few in each generation will take up traveling or settle in towns or to
farm. Or go the the Queen's grove. |
