How One Becomes King

No one can remember who the first king of Telrae came about, or even how the second and third were found. It is said that on one morning a group of His First Children stood outside of the Dark Forest preparing to enter. The proposed incursion was dangerous, and many expected not to return. As they discussed tactics and planning, a tall broad shoulder man walked into the group. They knew of course who it was, everyone knew Brian of Farhawke. He had often joined them when there was trouble or decisions to be made. But this time there was something different about him, a calm and assurance to his bearing, far more then usual. He said simply, "Athlendyr has called me to serve."

The others understood this little, but nodded and accepted him into their ranks. That day they were surprisingly victorious and none died. From that day forward, the nobles turned to Brian for answers and decisions. Twenty more years or so had past, and by this time Brian was call Chil'en'atar "Heir of the Father" or simply en'Chil "the heir."

One day, Brian was found packing his belongings from the great command tent that was his. Battles with the gnawlings had grown fiercer after the harsh winter past. Tomas his most trusted commander asked where Brian was going, to which their king responded. "My time of service is over, another shall come." Tomas shook his head confused, he was a simple man in many ways and could not understand why Brian had to leave or why another was meant to take his place. But the quiet conviction in Brian's voice assured Tomas and he helped his lord pack.

Brian bid farewell to those of his newly formed court and headed west, back to his home, a look of relief upon his face. Early that next morn Tomas, hoping Brian had returned scratched on the walls of the command tent. Much to his surprise and old and some what weak voice responded, "Enter." Stepping into the tent, Tomas was met with a pair of startling blue eyes, brimming with intelligence and keen wit. The man wore neatly embroidered blue cotton robes and had a full head of white hair. The man was easily 180 if he was a day. Cocking his head Tomas regarded the stranger, who responded, "Athlendyr has called me to service." A bit taken aback as to how this fragile old man would help them in the coming battles, Tomas did not respond at once.

The old man smiled and said, "Send word to Valgard and Zuben, requesting a shipment of grains and food. The gnawlings do not need to be fought they need to be fed." A look of dawning comprehension settled upon Tomas and with a grunt of respect answered, "Yes my lord." And so the reign of Ritchln the Generous began and ended five short years later. He passed away quietly one night a soft smile of relief upon his face.

The court panicked unsure of what to do, they spoke of electing a new king, positioning and politicking had begun as soon as the announcement of Ritchln's death was made, but Tomas simply waited. He sat by the side of his king as he lay in state and waited. He was lost in repose when a warm strong hand settled upon his shoulder. Looking up Tomas gazed into the face of the all father, and then in a surprising bit of emotion, dropped his head into his hands. "I can not do this my father."

With a hint of firmness and love, the golden voice of Athlendyr spoke, "Yes you can my son, Tomas of Cathfarn, I call you to service, go lead our people in my name." The words filled Tomas with resolve, he stood and nodded gravely. And so the reign of Tomas the Patient began, he ruled for 89 years, heralding the first golden age of kings.
