HolidaysA rich and fertile land, it is no surprise that the predominant trade for these people is farming, and that the holiday's coincide with the seasonal equinox. Well planted fields and bountiful harvests are a sign that Athlendyr is pleased and the cause of great celebration. Holidays build on the religious teachings of Athlendyr ... generosity, forgiveness and beauty. Four Main HolidaysMay dayspring celebration (Is accorded to the Celtic holiday of Beltane which is typically celebrated April 30th and May 1st.) The BountyA Christmas type event held at the height of summer. Wagons are emptied of their hay and produce and piled high with flowers. Gifts are piled on and under the wagons. The nobility share in this, with great wagons left in the cities or traveling to the local towns. The poor and children do well and receive many gifts. (Is accorded to the Celtic holiday of Midsummer which is typically held on the summer solstice which is within a day or two of June 21st.) Summer's EndSummer's End is also known as the Feast of the Dead. On this Eve, the veil between the spirits and the world of the Dyrlings is the thinnest of the year. It is a time for discarnate spirits to visit the Dyrlings openly for the evening. Legend states that the only way they could escape the pranks or haunting by spirits would be to dress up as one of them so that the spirits would not notice them. If they preferred not to dress up, they could place treats by the front door to appease the spirits from bothering them. This is a time of reflection of one's past actions throughout the year. It is also a time to honor one's ancestors. It is the time to look within and examine one's motives and deeds and to shed that which is not productive any longer, much as the trees shed their leaves and turn within for their energy at this time. (This is accorded to the Celtic holiday of Samhain which is typically held on October 31st.) The BurningA winter event when everyone dresses in elaborate clothing and drinks mulled wines. The main celebration is the tossing of old grudges written on paper into the fire. A tradition of giving small very personal gifts to loved ones happens. (This is accorded to the Celtic Holiday of Yule which is typically held on the winter solstice which is within a day or two of December 22nd.) |
