Drugs & Gambling

Most Dyrlings gamble on almost anything.  Some find it a waste of time.  If they saw a flock of birds fighting over a crumb of food they would bet on which bird would get it.  They find it entertaining to wager on which suitor wins over the other.  There is no hardship in this casual betting.  It's a past time and a form of entertainment to them.  If two people where sitting and waiting for another to show they would take bets on what time the person would get there and the person who gets closer to the time wins the wager.  Dyrlings are one big family and find it fun to bet on almost everybody and everything.

Most Dyrlings would also find smoking and or chewing (tobacco) a way of life.  Some find it not to their liking.  Even some of your little ole ladies can be found chewing snuff or smoking on a pipe.  You may find most Dyrling soothsayers and gypsies smoking some herb to get them closer in touch with themselves.  Healers would also prescribe herbs to be used to put the patient in a calmer or sedative state to help heal the patient's wounds.

Alchohol

The most common of drugs, found in nearly all cultures.  The tale is told that a young girl was cleaning her cloths in milk to whiten them after her First Season caught her unprepared.  The girl left the pail unattended until the following morning.  While her family was quick to clean up the resulting concoction, the Eldest Daughter was intrigued at how her youngest sibling's mistake had changed the nature of the milk overnight.  It was not at ALL similar to the curdling of cheesemaking.

Using the resources available to her, she quickly determined that the essential ingredient was available all the time--an enormous relief to be certain--and that it could be cultured well apart from its original source--meaning that men could also use it.

The discovery quickly spread among Dyrlings.  First among the Sora'nau who seized upon fermented beverages as a more reliable source of clean drink for long journeys--and also because their new beverages made "borrowing" from Uzina a much simpler matter than it had been previously.  Then later among townsmen, who enjoyed not only the preservative properties of fermented products, but also the intoxicating properties.

Every region has specific produce they will ferment, from Yogurts among herdsmen, Wines in the temperate regions, and Beers of various types from every place where grain is grown.

Drinking Game: Six Degrees of Dyrling

(I don't intend this to be silly, I intend this to be something that people do when they're kicking back with a few pints, much like we Americans talking about who our ancestors are, when they came to this country, from where, why, and how badly Ellis Island munged our names(*)

I suspect that BoK may be too solemn for this, but still . . . )

A popular pastime among Dyrling is to try and connect one another's bloodlines with the fewest possible steps. "Jane to John . . . Jane the fifth daughter of Kayla . . who was the second daughter of Max, who was the son of Skul, who is the direct female-line ancestor of John's mother Gienna through four generations."

"Ah . .but you forgot that the sixth son of Skul is a MALE line ancestor to John through only TWO generations . . ."

Books would be consulted, and the stakes paid.

The winner would likely buy the next round of drinks and the game continues into the night.

Cards

A card game played with a normal deck of 52 cards where the goal is speed, and hoping for a good draw at the beginning. Cards are put into stacks, four stacks per player, turned face up. From the left most stack, a card is taken from each player and put in the middle. The players then try and get their cards in the stack faster than the opponent.
Cards can go to either stack, but have to be in numerical order. Example: First card on the stack is a 5. You can either lay down a 6, or you can lay down a 4. You then play another 5, or a 3, and continue on like that. The match ends when one person runs out of cards before the other.
Bets are taken prior to dealing cards, and the winner takes the pot.

Dice

Standard high/low dice game, but with a twist. You bet each time, usually a few gold pieces per roll. You roll, and whoever has the highest, takes their 100 back out of the pot. The loser keeps their gold in the pot. The game continues on until someone rolls a 12, in which case they take the entire pot, or they roll snakes eyes (2), in which case they give the entire pot to the opponent.  If more than two people are playing, the person who rolls snake eyes first is eliminated, and his gold kept in the pot. Rolling twelves in a game with more than two people does nothing except ensure that you get your money out of the pot faster. A multiplayer game continues on until all but two have been eliminated, in which case the normal rules come into play again.

Bluffing Game

Need 2 or more players

*This is a great game when you are sitting around a table at the nearest Pub drinking.*

At the beginning of the game each player places 5 coins in the middle for the pot. The stakes can be raised if every player agrees on it.

Get a deck of cards and deal them all out to every player. Person to the left of the dealer starts with aces. They put down 1-4 cards and say, "I have ( ) aces.". Everybody looks into his or her cards to determine if the player is bluffing. If they think he/she is bluffing they say "No Bloody Way!". If the player is bluffing they have to pick up the cards. If they are not they show them to everybody and the person who said "No Bloody Way!" picks up the cards. Play continues to next player to the left. He/she starts with 2s placing 1-4 cards and saying, "I have ( ) 2s." Everybody looks into his or her cards to determine if the player is bluffing. If they think he/she is bluffing they say "No Bloody Way!". If the player is bluffing they have to pick up the cards. If they are not they show them to everybody and the person who said "No Bloody Way!" picks up the cards. The play continues around the table to Kings. After Kings it goes back to Aces. The person who runs out of cards first wins the pot.
